hi guys. 2001 tahoe 4x4. so every now and then when i go into reverse i hear grinding and a slight mechanical skip/pop as i roll back. that keeps going until ive rolled forward in drive a good 100-100 ft. i recently changed the fluid in my transfer case. changed trans fluid and filter at 140k. 197k on them now. i guess i cant be mad for this many miles on factory units they way i drive. :)

would my transfer case have anything to do with this or is it all trans?

this sucks. i would feel dumb having the transfer case rebuilt and not doing the trans with this many miles. any other opinions?

Maybe a closer look at some of the fluid could help you a little more.

If you get someone to help you. You could put the rear of the truck on jack stands and chalk the front wheels...climb under there and listen to each component while someone puts it through the motions that you know to cause the noise.

and boom goes the tranny. sitting at a light on my way to drop it off for a rebuild. let go of the brake, barely touch the gas and boom. the sound was awesome. squeeling like a pissed off, stuck pig while at the same time clanking like holding a stick to a chain link fence and walking down the sidewalk. hope i didnt break too many hard parts. oh well. money comith, money goith.

already done. got it back monday. very quick and they did a great job. ended up being the planetary. came out in 3 pieces. they did a full rebuild, hardened sunshell and some other updates for $1567 out the door including R&R.

my tahoe hasent driven this nice and smooth for a long time. i had been comtemplating a newer truck but now with the money spent on the trans and how nice it still is with 198k miles i think ill hold onto it for a few more years. ill just do a minor restoration and replace some parts as time goes.

I know the feeling all too well! I was pulling away from a stop sign on Friday morning and the same thing happened to me! I ended up having a used tranny put in only because it was the quickest route for me to get my Hoe back. Got mine back Tuesday then Wednesday went to work and the same darn stop sign and my fuel pump went out.

you should find another route to work lol. that sucks man.

believe me, I thought about it. however, its the best route with least amount of traffic in case something were to happen. the only other way I could go I'd have tractor trailers and I don't want to break down with one of them behind me.
