I agree. It's very annoying. I held off purchasing a couple of different 2009's since I'd heard about the USB being in the 2010's just to find out it didn't work. It's interesting that yours is not giving an error message. There may be another problem as well as the known issue with the Nav units. Below is what GM is telling the dealers on the known issue:

#PI0003: Navigation Radio USB Error Message - (Nov 19, 2009)

Subject: Navigation Radio USB Error Message

Models: 2010 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe

2010 GMC Sierra, Yukon, Yukon XL

All Equipped with Navigation Radio RPO UUK or UUL

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:

Some customers may report one of two concerns:
• If a USB/ iPod® device is connected, the radio will display the "USB Error" message for three seconds , the music will stop and the radio will default to the last known radio source before the USB device was selected.

• If a USB/ iPod® device is NOT connected, the radio will display the "USB Error" message for three seconds on any of the navigation/radio screens.
Recommendation/Instructions:

Engineering has identified this as a software calibration concern on certain vehicles equipped with DENSO navigation radios (RPOs UUK or UUL).
Important: DO NOT replace the navigation radio for this concern.
Engineering is working to provide a repair for this condition. Further information will be provided when available.

You may want to try putting some mp3's on a flash drive and connect it to the USB port in the Tahoe to see if it connects. If not, it could be a cable issue. Just my 2 cents.

There are times when I connect my iphone, and other iphones, when it just doesn't do anything at all. Usually, if I turn the car off for a minute then start it again, it recognizes the iphone and works fine (except of course for the faint clicking sound). Based on what I'm seeing through these postings it's clearly a work in process for GM. Kudos to robsieb for pursuing the problem, if GM ever fixes it, will have to give credit to robsieb.

Yes, as long as the music is in an appropriate format, I think mp3 and wma are ok, but I don't know about others. And if you have a mac computer, that presents other problems because of how the mac writes the music to the thumb drive, but if you are using a pc, you should be fine.

a long as you dont reformat the drive, you can write to it with a mac. I share files via thumb drive all the time, and play them on my ps3.

Good to hear that the thumb drive works. If it were me, I'd make sure the dealer is aware of the iPod issue when/if you need to take it in for service. Drives me nuts to spend 40-50K on a vehicle that has problems connecting to the most popular music device ever.

By the way, I tried connecting a Zune. Not sure if it's related to the other issue I have or if the device is simply not supported but when connected, it didn't even think about it for a moment. The screen on the head unit quickly displayed "Device Not Supported".

not only does it work but the thumb drive in the USB port clears the storage bin which i thought would be a problem, you know the drop in tray organizer?

I'll have to try this in the Escalade. I really like the USB feature, wish I could add it to my Tahoe somehow. I might just buy one of those aftermarket iPod kits that work with the steering wheel and such.

Mine seems to work ok with a flash drive and mp3's. I just plug it in and it plays showing USB on the screen. Do you have your mp3's in folders? Is there anything else on the drive such as pictures or software. I'm not sure if this makes a difference but are you using a Mac or PC to put the files on the drive?

FWIW, when I plug my iPhone 3GS into the USB port, it will play, but the device will NOT charge and I also get a message on the phone about "this accessory not supported". However, when I plug in an old iPod Classic, it works fine.

I tried my iPhone in a 2010 Saturn Outlook with USB port and it worked fine.

My Tahoe is a 2010 LT with rear entertainment and non-Nav head unit.

That one is easy... you need a Scosche Passport. It is doing the charging on the wrong pins, new ones are different.

I've found that disconnecting and reconnecting a couple of times my phone will charge. Sometimes it will quit charging but no matter if it charges or not I still have the issue with popping during playback. Had GM done this head unit correctly it should adjust the voltage for whatever device is connected. Basic USB 101 in my opinion.

Still no resolution on my problem(s) but I did get a voice message from GMC today asking me to call them on my concerns as written on my recent customer survey. :)

Not as far as I know, robsieb seems to have been able to at least alert GM to the problem, but I don't think anything has been resolved yet. I had some aftermarket work done on my 2010 yukon to unlock the screen while driving so my dealer just blames that work and won't help me, but there is no way the two are related. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, it's sad, but I've just learned to live with it.

I havent had the tahoe more than 2 weeks and im really sickened by this issue. ive opened a case with GM as well. When i get my customer service satisfaction from my dealership someone may lose their job over all this. im going to mark unsatisfactory on every single line to get someones attention as my dealer is being a jerk about it all.

Still no fix but I'm glad to see other getting fed up with this. I believe in order to get it resolved it's going to take everyone who has the problem to take it up with the service manager. If GM has enough calls on it maybe, just maybe they will do something.

I emailed the service manager I've been dealing with on Monday to ask if he'd heard anything. His response was that he had emailed GM the Thursday before but the tech person was out until the 6th. He indicated he should hear back somewhere between the 7th and 9th. I've not heard back from him which kind of hacks me off. Anyway, I'm going to call him and suggest he do the same with GM. I'm not resting until its resolved or they give me something that works. Will report back what I hear.
