Well, first of all the little yellow light on the dial ought to signify which mode you are in. If you put it into 4HI on pavement, the truck will protest vehemently on turns.

If you have a 2-speed transfer case, you can hear and feel it shift into 4LO and hear and feel it shift into Neutral. Remember, in neutral the only thing stopping the truck from rolling is the parking brake or the car it rolls into.
