Well my gas gauge wasn't working on my 96 Yukon when I bought it(would only say there was a quarter left even when it was full) but the guy who I bought it from just filled it up around 300 miles...sounded good to me I didn't need to exactly use the gauge...well the fuel pump went out last week...the shop put in a new pump and sending unit and everything was great until the gas gauge started jumped around on me just after 5 days it would go from quarter left to quarter full to half to all the way full...this was from sunday until wednesday until I could get it in....took it back and they replaced everything again...they told me that they were having troubles with the new unit also...then they said that they just had to adjust the float...problem fixed I was told....ok...I fill it up and gauge shows full...it is less that a mile to home from the gas station and as I am driving home I look down at the gauge and it drops to quarter full and doesn't move hmmm Please help me out here what can I have the shop look at next week any ideas?

I think you got a bum deal. They might have replaced the pump and not the entire sending unit,to make a lil more money off you.

your gauge cluster could be bad.. or sometimes the put in the wrong sending unit. They might of put a lower gallon tank sending unit in then what you have it makes it go crazy like that.. make sure when you go back to see what gallontank sending unit they used and verify yours is Xamount gallon tank..

I just replaced the fuel pump in my 1999 ** myself- the new units don't come with the option of replacing just a single part. It is a big canister, single unit. Maybe ask them for the one they pulled out of your rig, along with the second one they assumed was bad?

I'd also check your wiring, because that doesn't sound like a faulty float adjustment, or anything. That sounds like a loose wire.

For those of you who were wondering...the gauge was the problem...spent $100 on a whole instrument cluster and problem fixed...odometer was very very close to my mileage also...so thanks to those of you who suggested to look at the gauge instead.

well thats good.. and hey its not hard at all to change your odometers! you take your original one and throw it in the other cluster. theres like 2 screws on the back side.. this is what i did to mine, and now i can say its perfectly legal and right to the exact 10th of a mile.. no cheating involved.. dont have to worry about saying its 83,242 miles off, you know..

umm well i have my old factory cluster, but my bad escalade gauge is sitting in it and it really goes nuts if i try and plug it in.. Go to the yard and pull one, and run home try it, if it doesnt work, run right back. bcuz theres a no return policy. other then that ebay or something.. i couldnt find anyone who sold brand new ones without going to the dealership
