Rims

Some of you from TF may remember at the end of last summer I was asking questions about polishing aluminum rims. I had these Ultra rims given to me. I thought I could just polish them a little and they’d be fine. Upon closer look, they aluminum was badly pitted and corroded. I ended up having to go back to 150 grit wet dry and work my way up to 0000 steel wool and Blue Magic polish followed by Meguiars Hot Metal Chrome and Aluminum Polish. I figured I had more time than money so I decided to work on them over the winter. They should have been done and mounted by April or May but after the third one I lost my enthusiasm. I ended up finishing the fourth one a couple of weeks ago. Here are some before and after pics of the rims and the ride.

Now, because I know you guys let me address two things; stance and dress.

Stance – I like the rake so that’s not a problem for me. As far as height goes, I live in an area that gets lots of snow. It’s not uncommon to be driving through 6” of snow in town. I also tow a 23’ RV trailer with it, sometimes off the main road. I need the clearance.

Dress – First off, it came with all the chrome, although to be honest, I really don’t mind it, I think it’s a regional thing. There are probably as many rides dressed like this in my area as there are debadged rides where the rest of you live. That being said, I also wouldn’t mind losing the rocker panels. My only concern is, with as much real estate as they cover, and as long as they’ve been there, I wonder what the paint would look like underneath. I can’t afford to paint it so if I peeled them of and it looked like shit I’d be screwed.

Anyway, they’re finally finished and I think it’s a big improvement for the ‘**.

He's my neighbor across the street. It was actually a trade. I gave him a chain saw I hadn't started in 20 years and he felt guility so he gave me the rims. After he saw the finished product he joked about selling them and splitting the money. Yeah, right. I averaged around 26 hours per rim and have over 50 bucks in sand paper invested in them. Believe me, those free rims cost me plenty.

Dude, is the chrome why you've been afraid to post pics of your truck all this time? It's not my cup-o-tea, sure, but it's a VERY nice looking Tahoe, even before the rims.

After, however, looks outstanding. Wonderful job bro. Those wheels look brand new, and really set off the rest of the chrome on the truck.

Now lift that bish and throw some 285's on her. ;)

Thanks but no, I wasn't holding out 'cause of the chrome. I wanted to have the rims finished and mounted before I posted up. As far as lifiting, would be fun but not gonna happen, can't afford it. Plus the wife doesn't care for lifted SUV's. The '98 Ram has 3"s under it and runs 33x12.5.15's.

I guess I should have said "level it" as opposed to "lift it". You can score keys and spacers for under $200, and run 285s. Still comfy with a little added ground clearance and room for beefier tires...if thats what you wanted to do. I like how mine sits, and I didn't notice any appreciable difference in ride quality.

I personally feel that anything more than a leveled Tahoe/Yukon looks kinda retarded. Sounds like you have the whole lift thing covered with the Ram though.

I don't mind lifted Tahoe's as long as they're 4x4's and it's done right. In fact, seems like someone on here has a '99 2 door lifted and pictured in their siggy. Looks bad ass. I', running 265's now, 285's would be nice but I don't have the coin for keys, tires, and gears.
