I just finished my ddin install yesterday in my 2001 Yukon. I put the Pioneer AVIC-Z140 nav piece in. I love it. It looks good. I replaced the radio cage and bezel with one from an 03. Small amount of trimming but not to difficult. Took about 2 hours.

Here are some pics of the install of a double din Pioneer Avic-D3 in my 01 a while back. I took some pics of the brackets I fabb'ed and the the bezel I trimmed.
There are a couple different ways you can do this. One way is to trim the bezel, plastic weld ABS and re-finish the entire bezel. Another way is the way I did it below. I only wanted to spend one day on the entire install from start to finish so I did it the easier and faster way.

I took the clip brackets from a AI 95-02 GM truck dash kit. They need to be spaced apart 1/2" on both sides of the unit in order to clip back into the dash properly, so I used 1/2" scrap of MDF. I used my digital calipers to take measurements of where to drill the mounting holes and where to place the brackets so it would go into the dash right the first time.

The clips mounted to the spacers:

I removed the entire radio/hvac housing from the dash to make fitting and trimming easier.

Behind the radio, there is a metal bracket that is held in place by two rivets and two screws. The rivets can be drilled out, then the screws can be backed out to remove the bracket to make room for the new unit. Some units will require this bracket to be removed, some won't.
The trim bezel needs to be trimmed in pre-03 models to fit a dd unit. I used my Dremel, asst of files, and finally different grits of paper to trim and round-over the edges of the new opening to match the oem edges. Some people mention using a 03+ bezel, but the problem is that you'll need to reposition the HVAC controls, and the contour along the bottom edge of the bezel won't match up perfectly if you have the full legnth center console that butts up to the dash.

That's awesome what do you have in the middle console where the six disc cd changer use to be in the middle dash?

I used MDF and fiberglass.

I have a 2004 Yukon XL Denali and I installed an Alpine D-310 where the 6 disc changer was and its an Alpine 7" flip up DvD player which runs the show, it has an Ipod connection that is running my 80 gig Ipod hidden under the seat and ran from the screen off my D-310 I also hooked up an IVA-M300 Navigation Alpine to the d-310 and the M300 Navigation is mounted under the seat which is nice because the went away from the DVD maps and have it all in a 5" by 6" box. I installed an alpine input only 7" flip up only screen where the screen it's hooked up the Alpine D-310 and a 19"screen in the back and that was tough because the moon roof was difficult to mount around the moon roof but I got it. You can watch the same movie on all three TVS or have the navigation on the 310 and movies playing on the other two TV's. Watch three different movies on the three different TV's the rear has head sets. Its the perfect TV set including the Pac 7 allowing to watch on all three screens while driving. Its a great road trip vehicle The regular Alpine input screen has it only speaker and the D-310 has head sets and the alpine 19" is a touch screen with there own headsets. I love my setup!!

Hello, I'm new to the forum and I have bought a GMC 2002 Yukon XL SLT. I'm excited because of all the room that I have to play with. I have been looking at your dd install and it is beautiful. I am looking to install a dd aftermarket stereo. the stereo that I'm looking at is the Clarion NX404. It has a lot of cool stuff that I can use for the entertainment of my family when we are on the road. I just wanted to know how much trimming was involved on the bevel and if I could get some more info like measurements and product names and stuff like that, that you used on the build and install of your system. I do appreciate any help at all.

I stuffed this Kenwood Garmin DD into my 2001 suburban. It was no easy task. Had to cut behind the radio and the dash above the a/c. Still needs some final touches but i can live with it for now. I will repaint the dash gun metal grey. And straighten the edges.

I want to add a gps navigation unit as a lower screen where the 6 disc changer is on my 2003 denali. Is there a way to have sound coming from my main pioneer head unit and the lower navigation unit?
