I was hauling my boat up to the yard for storage yesterday and only had a little less than a quarter tank. The trip was about 35 miles and by the time I was a few miles away from the exit, the gas light came on and it stated I had 27 miles of range. No big deal, I thought, as I was literally 1.5 miles from the freeway exit, the boat yard and a gas station.
Oh was I wrong! By the time I pulled into the parking area, it stated LOW in the fuel warning and not a mileage calculation. I dropped off the boat, and when restarting, I saw something I’ve never experienced before. My low fuel warning now had a message, something like this, which went away before I could snap a photo:
“Extreme fuel use. 4 minutes of fuel remaining.”
OMG: not miles remaining, but MINUTES!!!
After a clencher of a .5 mile drive to a gas station, all was well. It did emit an odd exhaust smell as I pulled into the station, so hopefully that wasn’t my fuel pump burning up!
TL/DR: drive your Yukon XL to empty and it will tell you not how many miles left at complete empty, but minutes of engine run time! Oh, and 20 foot fiberglass stern drive boats suck gas when trailering at 70MPH!
