Could it be the Transmission?

So i almost had a HUGH accident yesterday night on the freeway when i got off work. As i was getting on to the ramp to the freeway, all of a sudden the 4 wheels on my truck locked on me and i started swerving... Luckily i was able to get over to the right hand emergency lane.. Well i thought i had popped my front tires or something got caught in the tires but it wasnt that ether. While i still had the truck running i tried putting it in reverse and over to Drive to see if it would move and my truck was not going anywhere...even after i was reving the engine... Im comfused and really dosnt know what the problem could be... The only thing that pops in mind is that the transmission blew out on me... If im not correct, does anyone ever experience this problem on their 4wd 99 HOE..... Need help ASAP so it can get fixed....

If you were driving in 2-hi mode and all for wheels locked up at the same time Your transfer case or both differentials(longshot I know) is at fault. If you were driving in 4-wheel mode the transmission or transfer case could be at fault. Regardless of which one it is you have probably damage the other if you were going fast enough. What noises do you get when shifting into gear? Do you get the shifting into a gear bump but engine struggles to get the vehicle moving and it acts like you got the brakes fully applied. Do it do nothing at all? Details.

I was driving in 2hi... And i wasnt getting any shifting noises at all. I was getting my shifts points at the right time.. If i was getting a bump was on my first shift but it was just very soft bump... Now one thing i was starting to listen to was my drive shaft sound like if it was scrapping against some other metal when it was moving as if when u get that brake noise.... that was it... once the tires got all locked up and it felt as if i had the brakes fully pressed, i pressed on the gas to try to move the truck and then it wouldnt jump into any the first shift.. and the truck wouldnt move.. Now its kinda weird cause i didnt here anything hit or bump but just felt my tires locked as if i had slammed on the brakes...

So if you put it into gear and try to rev it up does the engine spool down slowly as if you were in park or nuetral or does it spool down really fast like you have it under load? Also can you check the fluid condition and level of the tranny and transfer case.

Can you initiate a nuetral shift position with transfer case control and see if vehicle will roll? Get some one to stay in the cab to work the brakes. If the transfer case unlocks into nuetral and your differentials and shafts are fine the brakes are the only thing that is going to stop the vehicle. Try this with tranny is park and nuetral and can I safely assume that the vehicle is still locked up even if you put the tranny in nuetral? the engine need not be running for these test although it would boost the braking effort if it was.

ok this is new to me... can you explain how to put the transfercase into neutral? I see where it would light up if it were in neutral but i don't know how to do it myself...

I know the owner's manual says it in there, But I believe you put the transmission in park, apply the brake, and hold down the 2HI and 4LO buttons at the same time.

Any word yet?

I had a caliper go bad on me once on the freeway. Yanked me 3 lanes over when the caliper stuck and then overheated making it worse.

The day it happened i took off the drive shaft so the back tires would roll... do u mind explaining a little bit better on what to do exactly? Thanks for all the help...

NO NOT THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL.... I think what he's trying to recommend that you read your owners manual on how to place the Transfercase(T/C) into neutral... by doing so you are taking the transmission out of the equation... when you T/C is in neutral then your truck should move when you push on it... the transmission does not move when your T/C is in neutral... So if your T/C is in neutral and the truck moves (being pushed) then you know the problem is the transmission... if it still doesn't move then its your brakes or ring and pinion... NOW... if your T/C doesn't go into neutral or the truck still doesn't "roll" then its probably your T/C and/or the tranny thats the problem.... AT LEAST thats what i think he was getting at!!!

See i think its something dealing with the drive shaft.... or where the drive shaft is connected to the rear wheels.. it cant be the transmission cause if it was, it would have start giving me shifting problems a while back... and like 2 weeks ago i started listening to a noise under the truck when the drive shaft turns as if something was squealing every time the drive shaft was spinning...

Alright I am awake I am here everybody calm down:)

Frank, currently are both drive shafts currently installed? let me know before we continue.

Two more things. Tranny's can go with out much warning. And here is how to get in and out of nuetral on an auto4wd system under normal circumstances:

Shifting to Neutral
To shift the transfer case to neutral, first make sure the
vehicle is parked so that it will not roll:
1. Set the parking brake.
2. Start the vehicle.
3. Connect the vehicle to the towing vehicle.
4. Put the transmission in NEUTRAL (N).
5. Shift the transfer case to 2HI.
6. Simultaneously press and hold the 2HI and 4LO
buttons for 10 seconds. The NEUTRAL light will
come on when the transfer case shift to neutral
is complete.
7. Shift the transmission to REVERSE (R) for one
second, then shift the transmission to AUTOMATIC
OVERDRIVE for one second.
8. Turn the ignition to OFF.
9. Place the transmission shift lever in PARK (P).
10. Release the parking brake prior to towing.
Shifting Out of Neutral
To shift out of neutral:
1. Set the parking brake and apply the regular brake pedal.
2. Start the vehicle with the transmission in PARK (P).
3. Press the button for the desired transfer case shift
position (2HI, 4HI, AUTO 4WD or 4LO).
4. Put the transmission in NEUTRAL (N).
5. Shift the transmission lever to the desired position.
After the transfer case has shifted out of NEUTRAL,
the light will go out.

At least you have the option. I have the original e-shift design and don't get the nuetral option.

block your wheels to prevent the truck from rolling just in case from now on.

Unlock the steering column but do not put the key in run or start. Shift the tranny into neutral. On the back of the transfer case were the axle attached to, take that output yoke and try and turn it but do not pull it out.
