So I used a new paint product I found the other day, Chrome Black-Out paint. Pretty cool stuff. Bumpers where chrome and didn't like it, so used this paint to add a black-chrome look. tell me what you think

Very hard to apply, and very hard to get a good picture of how it "really" looks, just has a weird effect,, and different angles make for different looks of black n chrome. Looks much better in person, but diffenently adds something different to the truck. Really like the way it came out, and no more chrome!!! Something different

Will post a pic here in a second. But painting chrome is extremely hard, usually you have to sand and marr up the chrome surface to make paint stick to it. But came accross: Dupli-Color Chrome Black-Out paint, that adds a "tint" of black to your chrome, or fully blackens out chrome, but still has that super shine that chrome has that regular paint can't ressemble. I used it on my bike awhile back, and looked amazing, and actually stuck very well. I tried the VHT taillight black paint, which changes chrome to purple, very ugly and doesn't stick right.

This product says to just apply, but I also used a adhesion promotor because it seemed to make the paint stick better for me, and is a clear primer pretty much.

I just cleaned my bumpers with simple green, then Grease and Wax remover, wiped down clean, then used the adhesion promotor, maybe two light coats. Then it's all about really light, even coats of this black-out paint, letting dry inbetween each coat, until you acheive the desired look you want. I practiced on many chrome items prior to doing my bumpers, so I could get the right darkness and look I wanted.

My rear bumper didn't come out as dark as the front so will redo. But that's the good thing about this paint, you can remove and redo without worrying about ruining your bumper like you would if you painted normally. Can go back to chrome if so desired

was thinking about getting some of this to do my grille and wheels but am skeptical about longevity. cant imangine how mad id be if it started flaking off the grille (got lots of bugs down here) or rims. anyway your job looks great.

Ya, it is very tricky to get a "REAL LIFE" picture of how it actually looks. It looks black, it looks black/chrome, it looks chrome??? Has a very cool effect, guess you would either have to have seen black chrome before, or see in person.

As far as longevity.... I've had it on my motorcycle for about a month now, with absolutely no problems. I have my headlight done, gas cap, forward controls and pegs, and so far after riding, and washing, it is holding up very well. I mean, like any paint, if you scratch it with something, ie: metal key, it's gonna scratch ya know!! But after riding my motorcycle hard, bugs and rocks and water everything, it is sticking to the chrome well with no peeling, chipping or anything. I guess time well tell. But being a paint product, and since I didn't have to prep/scratch my chrome up to make the paint stick, it can be removed right back to normal without any worries.

I did not take off my bumpers, I removed my plastic trim on my rear bumper and masked off the truck then painted. And the front I just taped the white plastic peices and masked everything off then painted. Just took my time and prepped very well and taped/masked off everything I didn't want painted.

As far as removal, it can be removed like any paint can with Acetone or paint stripper. And like I said before, if you painted it with normal paint you would have to marr up the chrome surface to get the paint to stick, and then if it did start to peel, you would be left with a scratched up chrome/aluminum looking bumper. But since I just had to paint the surface as is without any modification to the chrome surface, can be brought right back to original if needed.

I guess time well tell how long it will hold up, but my testing on my motorcycle and other parts, it seems to be holding up pretty well. Just letting everyone know my experience, anybody else may be different because like any painting thats done, it's all in the prep work, how you paint, and how let it dry, so...... PREP PREP PREP, LET DRY BETWEEN COATS, GOOD CLEAR/TOP COAT, DRY DRY DRY. my .02cents hope it helps

Interesting stuff. I've yet to see it on sale here, but I'll keep my eyes open. I might get some and play with it on my bike and 94 Yukon. Good job, I like it.

Looks good...... hope it holds up. I have had to paint my grille three times, it just can't hold up. I need to stop being lazy and get it powder coated. Haven't seen you rollin' round lately, hope I catch you on the road to see how she looks in person...

I know, I am always keeping my eyes open for you, we should get together some night and hit up the Pavillions or something.

I know, I've painted chrome before with bad results. But, trying something that is "supposedly" for chrome, so....worked well on my bike, so hoping for the same results on the Hoe. Usually after painting right onto chrome you can take you finger nail and scratch it off, but I can't with this stuff, so.... I guess time will tell, n if it starts to chip I'm gonna sue Dupli-Color!! LOL

cool cool,

I'll have to keep an eye out for this kit.

I think it would look good with my dark silver/grey (gunmetal) color

Ya, if someone did this with a black or grey/gunmetal ride, would look real good. I just washed my car today, and bumpers, also used a bristle brush to see what would happen, and all is good. No problems, no scratches, no marks at all, it seems to be sticking very well to the chrome. But again, more time will tell, but since I clear coated it very, very well, it should have a nice top coat to protect it. will see

I think this would look sick on my caddy... If I every decide to completely black it out, I'm trying this first. Good post.

the nali is gunmetal colored (spiral Grey) so im thinking this would look sick for the front chrome grille assembly... I have never been a fan of chrome wheels and i bought these a year ago with plans to podercoat them... but i haven't had the funds to do so, so this may be an option for me... I saw this product about 2 months ago and couldn't find anything about it or if anyone had used it with good or bad results... may pick this stuff up and try it out
