Two months ago I stepped outside to find my beloved 2003 z71 stolen. It was locked right under bright lights. Fortunately the police located it two days later but badly damaged with the steering column torn out of it and they backed into a wall and smashed up the rear bumper and quarter panel. I was sick as its a low mileage 2003 with 135K on the clock.

I found out that these are highly desirable and often stolen. I am writing to hopefully save you the grief and trouble I have had to go through to get it all back together and it will never be the same. Try finding an original bumper with the matching beige trim that the Z's had let alone a steering column that's not torn up.

I purchased a club that locks the steering wheel to the brake and they make a steering column cover that locks over the column and ignition to help discourage thieves. If you love your Tahoe or Yukon like I do its a cheap investment to possibly keep your truck from being stolen. Its a sickening, helpless feeling to have your ride stolen.

Best wishes,

Were the thieves ever caught/identified?
vehicle theft is a slap on the hand, happens so much and they can't do anything to stop it. At best they try and go after chop shops, but most thefts are by "kids" or young adults, drug addicts, unless you get caught a multitude of times your going to get probation and "maybe" a short stint in jail.
we all pay for it with higher insurance rates............
the pro's go after the new models and send them out of the country. there''s no money in a older gm vehicle unless it's a vintage collectible.
this was a "joyride" plain and simple. The PD is not going to waste there breath on it.

sadly if these pos ****** want your truck a club and column lock wont stop em.

main issue with these trucks is the steering wheel does not lock. them clubs they cut the wheel, or bend it around the hook. cordless power tools have made is super easy to do these days.

only thing that does work is a spark kill switch or fuel cut off switch, hidden of course, but by the time they figure out it wont run they already screwed up the column and door lock.

I have a theft device installed on my inner doors. It's called Jimmi Jammer.

Description

The Jimmi Jammer is a steel plate that mounts inside your vehicle door to prevent thieves from prying in around the handle to get at the lock rods. The Jimmi Jammer also helps prevent the lock from being punched into the door using a screwdriver. Installation is simalar to changing the door handle, but once installed you gain protection from theives prying into your vehicle. Screenshot_20250429_164037_Amazon Shopping.jpg

Thieves were never caught. Basically so many cars are stolen here in Florida the cops could care less. They didn't do any investigative work and the license plate was stolen. I could not get it replaced until I had a police report and it took them 5 weeks before they posted a report I could have to go get new plates. As of today I'm still waiting on the body shop for additional parts and work and the steering column has to be repaired as the lock was broken on the inside. It never ends.
