Wife was coming back from soccer tournament Sunday evening with daughter and had a blowout of right rear on freeway going about 60MPH. She said she thinks she hit a pothole. Check out the damage to the rim - no debris rattling inside the tire. Michelin Defender LTX M/S about 2 years since installed and 30K miles - all have about 8/32 tread left, rotated every 10K miles or so, kept at 35-40 PSI. Never seen anything like this.

That is crazy. had a similar incident years ago, what ever it was went through the tire and a steel rim. Looked like a .45 exit. It was a country road, walked back up a couple of hundred yards and could not find evidence of what it might have been. Glad everyone is safe.

Holy crap, look at that hole in the rim!! Looks like it got punched out. Maybe a piece of rebar stuck in the pothole?

Glad all are safe.

Definitely a road hazard!

With that much wear, replace all of the tires. The AWD system, if you have it, doesn't like the tires being more than 1/8 inch different in height. Sell the old three on Marketplace or the like.

Yessir - I went one new tire shaved to 8/32 from Tire Rack and found an A- rim from SoCal - all in about $600 to replace.

That's a big hole in the rim. If yor rim is factory, I can probably source you a new one.

Lucky, we had all our tire shavers and siping equipment yanked in SoCal.

Probably occurred at a seam on a concrete highway exposing the rebar that was used to join a cold seam of concrete from one workday to the next.

Drop the tire off at the CHP station so the highway team can look for the culprit. If it’s a known and already reported incident you can apply to be reimbursed.
