highway or city miles? on the highway by 04 5.3 is sweet. city mileage is like 7 or 8 mpg at best lol
All around miles.
7/8 MPT sounds like something’s wrong. Either you have a lead weight on the gas pedal or it’s time to start replacing some plugs wires and other things.

7 or 8 mpg would be normal...if you were running a 454 big block. You got problems or are driving it like its a race car. (if thats the case, keep doing it and see how much it ends up costing you in repairs). The AWD might cost you 1 mpg over the 4wd version. I own (2) 03 5.3L and I average around 14 with mixed city (10 miles worth) and 55mph highway (3.5 miles worth) going to work. My 05 6.0L awd doesnt even do THAT bad. You getting a checking engine light? Replaced your air filter lately?really? for an 04 5.3? i drive mostly city miles. stop and go. i drive 20-25 miles daily. fill up every 5 or 6 days. still sounds wrong? city speed limit is 25. realistically drive 30 mph and faster on the highways. the truck is AWD. someone told me that makes a difference in the gas.

Just curious, what tires/wheels are you running? Any mods to the truck?
Well, there's your problem.just painted stuff and a different radio.
You should be getting more than that. I average 13.8 in the city with my 07 Yukon Denali 6.2 AWD. 20mpg highway. I would change intake gaskets ,knock sensors and do a tune up. O2 sensors too. Maybe look into your fuel injectors also
^^^What he said about injectors. There are multiple youtube videos on cleaning your injectors. If they get clogged up, they spray like a spray bottle on stream instead of on mist.
The holes are very tiny and easily partially clogged over time affecting the ability to "atomize" which is a fancy word that isn't really accurate, but it does describe the kind of mist you are looking for.
If the spray pattern is too concentrated, you get incomplete combustion, sending unburned gas out the tail pipe. Over time, if that is your problem, you spend more in gas than what new injectors would cost. The ECU or ECM will hold the injectors open till you get the acceleration you are looking for.
For less than $100 you can have the truck checked at an independent shop to get some advice what is happening. I assume that you have good plugs and no miss-fires or clogged catalytic convertors.
