Before and after:

Also detailed the engine bay while I was in there and trimmed down the front air dam. Feels a bit better and has a nice growl that was missing before. Relatively easy install as most intake systems are...had to remove the mini brace to fit the air filter housing in and install it back over top but other than that maybe an hour tops.

I had issues with this intake in my ‘19 Tahoe. I had random rattles and other noises under acceleration. Turns out the intake that places like Blackbear recommend is the wrong part for our trucks. Notice the difference in the air box for this one: https://afepower.com/afe-power-51-74110-momentum-gt-pro-dry-s-cold-air-intake-system
It doesn’t have the useless rubber plug and fits better than the model you installed.

Interesting! That explains why I had to remove the little brace to get it to fit. So far, no weird noises or issues though. Seems to be working nicely.

Just installed that one this weekend. It does have a plug on the bottom.

I had the brace rattle when I installed my AFE last year. I put on some felt tape between the brace and the box and problem solved.

I have the same intake. Fit perfectly and I removed the useless rubber plug for more air flow. It sounded real good until I did my exhaust. Now I can't hear it anymore. lol

Just got off the phone with AFE and discussed the difference between the fully enclosed box and the one listed on Black Bear with the crescent moon opening. He felt that the one with the half crescent moon opening is the way to go even if you need to remove and reinstall the small brace and use some felt. Did you guys go dry or oiled version? Thanks.

I also had a discussion with AFE tech support and got a different answer. The 74104 is the one with the extra port on the housing, and is CARB approved. Then there's the 74110, not CARB approved, has better performance gains, but doesn't flow as well. To complicate things, there are four other models that fit 12332, 32332, 82332 and 30028R. According to AFE's dyno numbers, the 30028R gave the best performance gains with +15hp and +21ft/lbs, and flowed 30% over stock. The 74110 had gains of +14hp, 17ft/lbs, with 30% flow over stock. While the 74104 flowed the best with +35% over stock, but only had gains of +12hp, and +15ft/lbs. . I'm in Cali so most retailers will only ship CARB approved parts to California. With that said, I will be running the 74110 with the dry filter.

I wonder if the sealed box without the port benefited from less heat despite less flow? Maybe I'll go that route as well. Going to add the Black Bear tune and most likely call it a day on my 15 YXL 6.2.

Just ordered the Black Bear Autocal and AFE 74110 dry filter. Will report back in a couple weeks or so after the install and file exchanges. Thanks 1sikryd for your input.

Yeah, just got the tracking numbers for my AFE 74110 as well. Took a while to find a retailer that would send me one. Let me know what you think of the Black Bear tune, I'm thinking of going that road.

Guys, I need your help before I pull the trigger of availing a slightly used afe intake. According to the seller, it is for Silverado / Sierra. I am not sure if this will fit for a ‘17 Tahoe 5.3L.

I see part #74104 in the pictures, which is one of the ones listed about 6 posts above this as being compatible with these SUV’s. So you should be good to go.

Thanks brother! I didn’t realize it was already mentioned few posts above and wasn’t aware that was the part #.

I am just confused about the carb approved and not carb approved.

Take this with a grain of salt because I didn’t verify, but based on the post above, this is CARB approved. If you’re in CA, then that’s pretty important; outside of CA it shouldn’t matter one way or the other.

Did the install last night on the 74110. First impression is good and it has more zing off the line. Chirped tires a couple times without trying and that usually does not happen. I ran it without the plug in the bottom and while I like the noise I didn't like a drone that kicks in around 1600 and moderate acceleration. I disconnected the assembly and put the plug in . Just ran it again and the drone is gone around town. It's all about the regular CAI noise now and much better. Install with the plug for better sound and no drone. I also noticed no difference in power at all with the plug.
Turned in the Black Bear diagnostics and am waiting for the tunes. Dragy is on the way and I will run that pre BB tune and post BB tune. I wish I ran Dragy before CAI install.

Being in the city it has been brutal to try to get any Dragy runs; I have not had the room and safety to measure stock plus AFE CAI vs Black Bear plus CAI. There is no question that both additions has made the truck a completely different animal. Love it. Still have a bit of clunk in my low Park to Reverse, Reverse to 1 and 2 to 1, though. However, BB may not be able to solve this know issue. I'm running datalog for BB and will give them my notes to further refine. Where I use to always try to steal the keys to my wife's E63 wagon, this tune and CAI really makes the 6.2 a heck of a lot more fun to drive. I'll post more after diagnostics and retune.
