5.3 SLP Resonator delete W Esky/Denali bumper?

Hey, First post - been a lurker...

the ? is - does this combo fit/work... I will explain:

08' Tahoe
I was rear ended and picked up an Esky/Denali bumper. The Chrome strip really highlighted how ugly the stock exhaust was. After some reading on here, I went ahead and picked up the SLP resonator delete kit and installed it last night.

First off - for those who say it really is not much different, I was actually pleasantly suprised how the truck sounds now. It is a good bit deeper and you can hear it when driving around normally - not alot louder, but louder.

Anyway, when I first installed the pipe and put it on the hanger, the chrome tip is very very close to the bottom of the Esky/Denali bumper - maybe 1/4". Maybe I am imagining things, but it does seem/appear the Esky/Denali bumper sits a little lower (is taller) than the stock Tahoe/Yukon bumper. Not sure if this is true or not...I felt this was a bit too close with the heat of the exhaust. I tried shifting and moving the pipe around, but the hanger kept the tip very close to the bumper.

I am sure there are others out there with this setup - did you leave the tip close to the bumper - any issues with this (heat, tip hitting bumper on bumps, etc) or is all ok and I am just being paranoid...

For now I have disconnected the hanger and have the tip sitting about 3/4-1" lower than the bumper.

I had my SLP resonator delete kit on for about a year

It was pretty close to the bumper but never had any issues at all. Does this look like yours did? I now have removed the kit and just have the exhuast dumping after the rear axle. I may put it back on at some point but I am kinda liking the look of the hidden exhaust.

From the side picture, i'd say it sits a little bit closer than that, but your rear pic looks like it is basically touching the bumper.

guess it is ok then, looks like I have to get back under and adjust

Mine is close like that too...as long as it doesn't touch it will be ok. Don't ask how i know!!!

How does it sound now? If I don't have to spend the money on a resonator delete kit then I'll just skip it. Plus I really don't feel I need to have a chrome tip hanging out the back of the truck.

It sounds almost identical to how it did with the resonator delete kit on it. So taking off the small amount of pipe and tip made virtually no difference. I'm pretty sure I'll never go back to the kit because I like the look so much and it's one less thing to keep clean and polished up

Ok, so everyone here (reporting in the thread) appear to have the 'stock' bumper... I have been under the truck a good deal today playing with this, and no matter how I tweaked it, it was way too close to the 'Denali/Escalade' bumper. I thought i had it as far as i could, picked the kids up and by the time i got home, it was touching the bumper.

For kick's i called Joey at SLP, and he confirmed that the Esky/Denali bumper do sit a little lower and the 'hanger' would need to be lengthend for this to work without hitting the bumper.

I am going to see if i can just find a longer hanger grommet or whatever first, otherwise I will pull the SLP pipe off and have the hanger lenthened just a little bit (Or just sell this one and get an exhaust shop fab me a pipe and tip) Starting to look like I should have gone with option 2 to begin with here...

Just to follow up, found a 3inch exhaust dampner/grommet at autozone. Doubled them up as they are pretty thin, and this did the trick. Sits just about 1" lower than the bumper now. Easy fix, hope this info can help others.

John, would you mind showing a picture of the gromet installed? I just installed my slp kit and it's a tight fit as well. I actually use the top opening in the stock grommet (above the hole). This made for a nice fit but not sure if it will hold up over time

Mine sits just as close as most of them and no problems so far. I can't even slide my pinky in between. Bumper still fine. I also just replaced my stock muffler with a magnaflow and doesn't seem to be any extra heat as the bumper is still holding it's shape

I just can across my delete/tip kit in my garage. Never got around to installing it, but think I'd like to. But I think that part of the reason was the concern over the res delete causing any kind of resonation in the cabin. Can anyone say that it absolutely does or does not? At any speed/any rpm? I got a slight "buzz" at a very specific rpm range in my Mustang years ago, and it made me crazy. I'm not willing to deal with even a minor bit of resonance with this truck.

I've had two Volant supertips on both my 08 Tahoe and 07 avy and I never really heard the drone that much. My 6.2 stock Esky is way louder. I guess it's all a matter of opinion though. You said you aren't willing to deal with even a minor bit of resonance so it might be to much for you.

I'm perfectly ok with a louder exhaust note, if that's what it is. I just don't want the "harmonics" that you feel as well as hear. You know, like when you hit a certain frequency where it buzzes a panel, or makes you feel like you have to put a window down to let the droning escape. Experience anything like that?

I know this is probably more than you want to mess with but if you ever did get a resonance/drone at a specific frequency you could always kill it with a J-Pipe tuned to reduce the drone at that specific frequency. Corsa uses the same principal to make their exhaust drone free (just with tuned mufflers instead of a J-Pipe).

These are quite popular with the G8 and Camaro folks. Check out Solo Performance for some of their J Pipe exhaust setups (they sell adjustable pipes by themselves if you email them).

Kirk, I'm in the same situation as you. I've got an SLP tip waiting to be installed, but i want absolutely no drone. From what I've read people claim there is none, but its so subjective.

The J-pipe mod looks interesting and I do remember hearing my camaro friend mention it. Those cars seem to even drone in stock form.

I'm going to try and install my SLP tip this weekend. I'll let you know what I think.

I spoke with the guy at Borla who designs their exhaust systems. I told him I wanted to create a no drone system that was louder than stock but not too loud. His suggestion to me was to cut the resonator off the back as a first step.

He said it is there simple to reduce the volume of the exhaust. He said the main muffler under the car was designed to prevent any drone. So I'm thinking you should be just fine removing it.
