4x4 parts missing?

I recently bought a 1999 tahoe 4x4 with the 4l60e trans. When I bought it the guy said the 4wd did not work and the light for "service 4wd" was on.

Upon getting it home I look under and notice the front driveshaft is completely missing. However I'm not sure if I just need a driveshaft or any other parts? I took pics of both ends where the drive shaft should be.

You didnt notice it was missing before you bought it? I will go out on a limb here and say it was removed because there was an issue with the transfer case.
I can't believe you still bought it.

$500 for a running truck seemed like a good deal to me =/
Still doesn't help me on what I need to find in order to get it fixed to see.

Just go to a junkyard and find the drive shaft. Once you have it back in any other problems will be made clear.

Yep junkyard one will work. I got one and mine was adjustable

get a drive shaft and related end fitting but before install get it scanned with the right scanner to find out why the light is on. it is possible that it may clue you in to why it might have been removed.

is there a certain type of scanner? I have an odb scanner, but it did not show any codes. I found a driveshaft at a local junkyard ill pick up this week. Thanks for the help so far.

a dealer scanner or snap-on scanner or otc scanner the has the ability to communicate with modules other then the pcm. you need to be able to scan the tccm. there are others but they are not cheap.

Got the driveshaft today. After looking at it I will need the bolts and bracket that bold the drive shaft to the front.

The other end came with the gear end and after looking at it Im not sure if it just slides into the transfer case or if theres other parts I may be missing?
Any diagrams on this? I can't find one and I've searched all over.

it should be splined on the TC end and a rubber boot.

do your self a favor and replace the Ujoints while u have the shaft out!

Noticed the coolant was low and then randomly checked the oil and it was milky....Decided to drain it and found this..

I have been checking it everytime before I drive it so whatever caused this happened the last time i drove it (about 5mins)
I currently have all the oil out and have no idea where to start on what caused this, but it looks serious.

Any ideas?

I'll tear down the top half of the motor Friday and see what I find. I'm hoping its the intake gasket I keep seeing around. The thing never overheated or anything so I don't think it's a head gasket, but who knows.

Here are a few when I got it Sorry for how big the pictures are...dang phone(I've cleaned the inside quite a bit) I drove it about 100miles home and couldn't figure out why my ass was burning up only to notice the seat heater was on high lol.

Nice find for $500, I would have bought it myself as a parts vehicle and saved hundreds on parts I need for my truck.

Did you get the 4wd working? if you get the drive shaft in and it still doesn't work, check/replace the "Transfer Case Control Module" which is under the dash, you can get one from the junk yard. The other thing to check is the switch itself on the dash, do the lights on it light up? If not you can get one of those from the junk yard too for like 5 bucks.

I also had coolant leak into my oil and it was the intake manifold gasket. You can check if it is the heads by doing a compression check at each cylinder.

Thanks for the advice. 4wd is on hold until I get the leak fixed. I started taking the top manifold off but had to stop because it was so hot today. 100 all day and no shade sadly.
