Just out of plain ol' curiosity I wanted to get everyones 2cents comparing the 4L60 and 6L80 trannys (Sorry if this should go in Engine/Drivetrain)

Pros/cons, shifting, performance in general, performance in different driving scenarios, issues,duribility, gas mileage differences, whatever else

4L60
1 = 3.059
2 = 1.625
3= 1.000
4 = 0.696
R = 2.29

6L80
1= 4.027
2= 2.364
3 = 1.532
4 = 1.152
5 = 0.852
6 = 0.667
R = 3.064

(I think those ratios are right)

The 6/80 will yield a better cruising speed thus a better MPG

---------- Post added at 03:23 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:21 PM ----------

Te 6/80 is basically a split gear of the 4 setup

Now the best would be the 6l90e as the 90 is entirely different animal and will be the best.

I have the 6l while my friend has the 4l. We actually get the same gas mileage, 16.1-16. I think we both have 3.42 gears. Both are mad slow and I can't tell the difference honestly, besides mine always decides to shift at the stupidest times. Most of my driving involves freeway, but we basically drive the same amount of freeway/stop and go. I might have to contribute it to my heavier wheels and the Avy and Yukon XL being different. I do have a better cruising speed and rpm at 80 than him, I am a hair over 2k.

The 4l60e on my 99... Now that was a beastly transmission, super firm shifting, and basically everything that makes it fun but not ride quality wise. That got 11-13mpg.

Hold on now are you comparing the 60vs the 80 or did you miss type and compare th 4l80 vs 6l80?? Bc this will make a difference. As I thought you were comparing 2 80s which the 80 vs 60 is totally different trans in strength. Te 60 is basically an electronic 700r4 aka the standard trans in like every GM truck in history. Now the 80 came in the HD vehicles and is much stronger than the 60.

Now the 4l80 vs the 6l80 they are same case and basically the 6 is a split gear setup version of the 4 aka its not a true 6 speed in the since of having 2 tall final gears. As you can see from the ratios the 6l80 is damn close to the 4l80. Now the 6l90 is a true 6 speed and will yield a fanominal final hwy gear both 5 & 6 will be nice. And totally different than the 80 or 60

A 60 vs 80 is like go cart vs 4wheeler they are vastly different.

Had a 2010 6 speed...hated the shifting. No power at speed and had to punch it to downshift at the slightest hill. Cruise control was aggravating.

Now have a 2007 with 4 speed...love it. Keeps up easily at speed with minimal downshifting. Maybe not as economical, but I'm one of the weirdos who doesn't care very much about MPGs.

Depends on the vehicle and application. The 4 speed is definitely great for extreme high power applications, but the 6 speed is good for stock to mild set ups.

The 6L80e is a brute of a transmission and a great advancement over the 4L60e which we all know is a slushbox when you put power to it.

The 6L80e's have been know to handle 600 to the wheels, some report putting down more. This is out of a factory built trans, no bells or whistles.

Another good this about the new 6 speed transmission including the 6L60e is that with the low first gear you can run a higher gear in your differential with no loss of the stop. So you get the low end and still have the gas mileage once you hit OD. Unlike running 4.30's or 4.56's to help you off the stop and suffer with the higher cruise RPM in 4th.
