Yeah initially I was pretty worried about them tearing everything apart. But after understanding how common this is and that the dash actually comes out as one piece and not a million pieces. I'm not quite as worried about it. It's also possible that it may not need this at all and may just need recalibration, so I think we just need to let them take a look at it and see what the diagnosis is. I'm going to stop by the dealership today and show them the TSB And if they say oh, we've seen that before no big deal then we're going to get her in there as soon as we can.

I can assure you that, to be able to have the "dash actually comes out as one piece", there are numerous steps and pieces removed, to allow that.

Many pieces build a dash, but for decades all vehicles all designed to load the dash into the vehicle during assembly as a complete unit and can come out just as easily if you reverse the process. It'll take an extra set of hands to do this as the plant uses a large manipulator to load during assembly, but done right you can save yourself hours of disassembly doing it this way.

I agree. 40+ years in shops and been there, done that, to get a dash out. I am talking about all pieces removed to prep for dash removal and all taken apart to allow complete dash clearance. Dropping the complete steering column down, for instance.

Yup, just diagnosed as a heater and AC evaporator case assembly defect. Dash has to come out. 14 day wait for the technician that is skilled to do this. Hopefully parts are available. I told them to go ahead and schedule it. Praying no rattles or other misassembled issues....

Technically it is a right-side upper temperature door link that is disconnected, but according to PIT6452D they are instructed to replace case assy. The good news is that this part is not on backorder like so many other HVAC parts are now for GM. I went to a 2nd dealer who was much more confident in doing the job. Says with 2 guys it can be done in 1-1.5 days, and they have a slot open in less than a week to perform this. First dealer visited told me they only had one GM technician that could handle this and he is booked out till the middle of June. That's a zonk when your wife has cold feet everywhere you go....2nd guy locally seems to have it more all together...
Sounded like someone who wasn't worried or intimidated by the job, so we will proceed.

If this is a common problem. This is unacceptable
Well, it's common enough that they have published paper that tells how to deal with it so it must be common enough. It seems like overkill to replace the whole big assembly in there other than say an actuator or a door, but maybe you have to get that much apart to get to everything, I really don't know.... I think I'm more concerned about it than they are Sounds like they're not too worried about it and said it'll be done in two days...
Part is on its way and should arrive Wednesday.

How many screws or bolts hold the dash in place. I was told some time ago that removing the dash board was pretty bad as there is no way those fasteners would ALL find their way back into place. I am that guy that if I heard creaking etc, everytime I hit a bump. I’d be super pissed.

They basically said it all comes out in reasonably one piece other than undoing connectors, it comes out just like it's installed at the factory It's all big one cohesive hunk bolted in with about maybe 6 to 8 bolts i'm just guessing... But they said for sure that it doesn't get dismantled into multiple multiple pieces....

I get that the dash itself won’t come apart but…..
The headliner has to come out which means the a/b,c pillar supports are coming out. Ac vents are going to be disconnected on both the dash and headliners. All wiring harnesses seats/ carpet and center console too.
I saw a picture posted of what it looked like for one of these trucks, I was pissed looking at the picture.
Can it be done, of course. It’s just a 100k$ jigsaw puzzle. That hopefully no one breaks a tab or clip or scratches something during the disassembly or reassembly process. And if they did, that they’d replace the part rather than just shoving it in place.

Funny though, they can gut your car to replace a part but if you repainted a door panel that matched perfectly because it got scratched, you’d lose money on a trade in. Because it’d show up on a car fax report.

Believe it or not I just got it back today. They ended up having it over a week. The service writer showed me some pretty gruesome pictures. They had to take the seats out, the center console out, just to get the whole dash out in one piece basically. Amazingly I'm going to say so far, they did a good job. They didn't damage anything and my infotainment retained all settings and garage door opener settings. Everything went back into place; nothing rattles everything works and they even had the vehicle detailed for me since they had it so long. I had a loaner, so I told them to take as long as it takes to do the job right. It certainly appeared to be quite a job, but so far, knock on wood, the results are good. Quiet as a church mouse when I drove it home even over tracks and bumpy pothole roads
No charge as it was under warranty but I'm pretty sure if they only got paid the warranty hours, they lost money on that one....

On a big job like that, you can really mess up by trying to not remove components to save some time but it ends up cauding stress and missed/skipped steps that would have been so much easier on the tech had they went ahead and "created room".
