I have a 2017 Tahoe Primer bought brand new in 2017. Recently, I had the reason to drive a new 2020 Tahoe LT. My question is: Why does the new 2020 LT seem to drive better, smoother than my 2017? Did they improve the engine and transmission that much from the 2017?

My 2017 drives OK with about 14,000 miles on it, but the engine seems kind of rough compared to the 2020. Mine also seems to hesitate on taking off where as the 2020 just seems to accelerate just fine. Am I just imagining these differences or should I have my dealer look checkout my 2017?

Thanks for any responses.

Did the 20 have the 10 speed transmission?

Thanks for asking, but I'm not sure. It's actually a rental from Enterprise; no papers in the car.

I doubt that it's much more than the base model. Have they been using the 10-speed transmission on the LTs?

pretty sure the 10L80 started in 2018

that would be the only big diff between them...as the L83 would be the same.

the 6 & 10 spd are the good ones. the 8 spd sucked.

My 19 Suburban does not have the 10 speed transmission. I suspect that it is physiological (not in a bad way) that you have the perception that the 20 is better than your 17. I had similar experiences as I moved from my 16 to 17 and from 17 to 19 Suburbans even though they were virtually the same (with the exception of the trim level for the 19). I think it is because the newer vehicle is tighter and generally not broken in.

I think the 10 spd only comes with the 6.2.

Is it possible the worn tires on your 2017 cause more road noise so with the quieter 2020 also rides smoother? 14k isn't a lot of miles but I would think tire wear is the most likely reason.

Thanks for all the replies. I wasn't writing about the ride noise, just that the engine seems to run smoother in this 2020. Mine seems to hesitate and stutter sometimes. Well, I guess I'm probably trying to make up some excuse to buy a new vehicle; maybe not!

I have a 2018 LT with 19k miles on it. It had/has the rough idle but no hesitation. I had the motor mounts replaced under the TSB. I would say it’s 90% fixed. It’s weird it’s butter smooth at times and other times has a stumble but much better than before with the old motor mounts. I had heard that they may have bumped the idle up a bit on the 20’s to cover up the roughness. Just hearing. Can’t confirm. Mine idles at 500 RPM or slightly under.
