2007 Yukon XL - Rear Main Seal - Seeking Mechanic.

Hello Everyone,

After 5000 miles of successful driving since I replaced the transmission the rear main seal is shot !!! I had the transmission done by the dealer but they are saying that the main seal is not covered by the warranty, which is highly frustrating to say the least.

I am looking for shop/mechanic in the San Jose CA area who could do the work.

Anyone got an estimate on what is should cost, I'm paying the dealer again.

Ugh, that's frustrating - it would have been great if they'd have offered you the option when they did the transmission. Any time I have a shop pull a transmission for something, I always ask them to replace the rear main seal. The upcharge when they already have it out is only $100 or so for parts and labor. At this point, you're probably looking at $750 +- to R&R the transmission and replace the rear main seal.

But first a question: Are you sure it's the rear main leaking? Often times it's something else like the oil cooler block-off plate seal that's leaking and masquerading as a rear main seal leak. The only way to be sure is to pull the inspection cover below the flywheel, and look inside with a flashlight for oil leakage.

What Geotrash said. Have you opened the inspection plate and verified it is the rear seal?

If it is truly is the rear main, the tranny will have to come out. Maybe try and find a highly thought of transmission shop specialist that will do it for you. Likely end up being less hours and a lower shop rate. (they remove and reinstall transmissions all day long). The bad news is many won't do rear seals, unless they are doing the transmission.

There was a really good independent shop I used on jobs I didn't want to do myself, when I lived in San Francisco. It was owned by a friend of a really good friend of mine. Super honest, super great mechanics. It was C&D Automotive in Burlingame. It has been long time since I lived there, so I don't know if they are even still there, on El Camino Real in Burlingame.

If he is still there, give Mike a call and just tell him what the dealer said needed doing. He can probably give you a quote over the phone. The good news is anything that doesn't need doing, he won't do. Just tell him you got his number from a friend of Joel.
