Ive have 97 suburban with the 6.5L turbo diesel and the 4L80E tranny. Recently reverse stopped working, it acts as another neutral gear, I never experienced any grinding when attempting to reverse so i was curious what may be wrong with it before I undergo a entire tranny swap. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you!

You didn't give mileage or condition so it's still a guess from what I've seen before.
I think it is a stretched shifter cable due to pulling too hard *n shifter. If it has been hard to shift for a longer time, inspect brake interlock on column well. Report back with findings /fixes on this thread.

Do you have all forward gears still? You should drop the pan, and look for dark fluid, and metal at the magnet. Sounds like a toasted reverse band?

The truck has close to 160k on it, and is pretty average shape for the mileage. Reverse was working no problem and then one day just stopped working it still sounds like it clicks in to gear. I cant get to the truck today but ill check the shifter cable tomorrow.

If you drive in 1st gear and let off the throttle, do you get any “Engine Braking” slowing you down?
