I actually replaced both the rear main seal and the oil pan gasket last year. Like others have mentioned, you can see the rear main seal leak by removing the cover at the bottom of the bell housing. Also, clean it really well and it should show the problem spot soon. My rear main seal also had oil drips from that cover and the two bottom bolt on the outside of the housing. Once it was replaced, then I still had oil leaking and found it coming from the oil pan gasket. Lots of work, but glad it's over and no more oil on the floor.

Yup, start with the cheap and easy fix first.
Once you pop that inspection cover you should know what you're dealing with
I recently did my known oil pan gasket leak and I decided to do the rear main seal while in that area. I could see seepage inside that cover at the bellhousing. While down I did the trans mount, the torque converter seal and the transfer case mating seal.

I did my real main seal(and a lot more) 2+ yrs and 35k miles ago. Everything is still leak free with 165k miles now.
