I now own a 2002 Avalanche and have been looking for a Tahoe or Yukon.
I owe about $3300 on the AV and that is 14 more months and then done. Has 133k on it and runs great. Found a 2002 Yukon with 179k on it and runs fine. Tires and wheels suck but the dealer will let me trade mine off the AV for the Yukon. No impacts, just a ding or 2, couple of scratches. Burgandy color and Light tan leather interior with the 2wd or 4wd option, not AWD. Drivers seat not torn up. All seems to work. The dealer will trade straight across, pay off my loan and get me the 2 year loan for the same monthly payment as I have now. The 45k difference in mileage worries me but I do all my own work so not afraid of that part. Has 3rd row leather seating.

What do you think?

What do you think?

My first question would be WHY?

Why trade something that you know everything about for something with nearly 50 k miles more for the same price/loan?

What advantage does the Yukon have over the Avalanche that you are willing to do this for?

My opinion would be to keep what you got as this trade makes no sense to me. Now if you get the Yukon and pay off your loan and then no longer have a car payment, by all means. But not the way you described it above.

That is where I am leaning also but when I bought the AV I was looking for a Tahoe or Yukon and settled. Since my last Tahoe was a 1996 2 door I thought you guys could help with what I would look for as trouble areas on the 02. I think what I will do is just keep what I got and then when paid off I can trade it or sell it and get what I want. Thanks for the input.

I personally would have never settled until I found what I was looking for. Especially our rigs, there are sooooo many out there.

I also would never trade unless I would just get a trade in value I could not refuse ( which low and behold has NEVER happened for me).
Why don't you put your truck up for sale on Craigslist or auto trader and see what will happen and how much you may be able to get for it.

Then also search private party for your Yukon/Tahoe which will most likely be a bit cheaper that way.

Just my 2 cents.

I had went through a bankruptcy about 5-6 years ago and I had a 98 2wd 4runner that was doing ok but a friend kept bugging me to buy it. I sold it for $2000 and needed a vehicle. I couldn't find exactly what I wanted for the $2000 and another $4000 I had extra to spend but found the AV at a local dealer and it drove out fine and I wanted to start my credit back and they found 3.49% if I put $4000 down for a 2 year note. I think I will go to the same credit union tomorrow and see what they would lend me and at what rate if I found a Tahoe/Yukon I want and have sold my AV. Much better way to do it. Thanks for the input and your $.02. :)

normally i would say no way dont do it but you own an avalanche "no offense" but i think they are the most hideious god awful ugly vehicles GM has ever put on the road
who ever did that design should be shot
so if i were u id do just about anything to get out of that avalanche and into something else
and who talked you into settling for an avalanche if it was a carsalesmen you need to go back there and slap the shit out of him,
id probably take a pontiac AZTEK over a avalanche

Do you want an SUV or a truck? Thats the main difference, If you want an SUV go with that. Just know you dont have an open bed.

Here is an update. I did settle because I did need something because the 4runner was going away and I needed something to drive. The guy had the money then for the 4runner and would not have it later. Every Tahoe/Yukon I came across was wore out and/or lots of miles. As some of you know I live at and manage a storage facility here in Eugene, Or. I have an older lady that came in yesterday to give me notice that she is moving out of her unit and when she pulled in I saw a Forest Green Tahoe that looked pristine. I asked here what year and it is an 02. I said I was looking to buy one and she said it is for sale. She said the husband died recently and she wanted something new. The tan color leather interior is pristine, 142k miles. Engine runs fine and no dents and she has all dealer maintenance paperwork and repair paperwork from the day they bought it new. It needs tires but I drive so little that I can save for those. She said she would sell to me and wait for me to sell my AV. She wants to sell me the rig and only to me. She has been one of my good customers and we get along great. I think I just fell in to the deal I need to make.

Good condition on KBB is around $5500. That is taking in to consideration the worn out tires and I did show her that. Couple of small scratches at the drivers door, like key scratches from trying to find the tumbler hole in the dark, has a key fob so don't understand that? The drivers seat right fold down arm rest is cracked pretty good but I always drive with that folded up anyways. I believe I can get it for the $5500. I looked up my AV and should sell for around $7000 to $7500. My leather interior is almost perfect. Tires almost new. Has the new Gatorback belts and AC Delco tensioners and idler. Absolutely no leaks at the bed and all works as should. I am going to do some pics of my rig and post on CL and see what happens.

The fact that she has all dealer maintenance/repair paperwork seals the deal for me. They were close to retirement when they bought it new and always took to a dealer right down the road from me, for everything, including oil changes. I looked at the cooling system and it looks pristine. The oil is fresh and she said the brakes had just been done, front and rear.

All sounds good, my drivers armrest is worn as well.

See if you can get it for 5K?

Yea, it is like it was fate. She was having her son in law come get the washer and dryer out of the unit and it would have been empty but we had gotten along together so well she wanted to come say good bye. She had always showed up before in a Honda Accord. This was her husband's Tahoe so I had never seen it before till she just happened to drive it in yesterday. If the deal goes like I hope then I may have to get a lottery ticket the same day. LOL!

I personally don't mind the AV look at all. It can grow on ya and is a very versatile rig. I have had it a year in March and no problems except for the belts and tensioners/idlers. Came with new tires and all does work well. I do want a Tahoe or Yukon though. Here in Eugene the AV should sell no problem. Thanks for all the positive comments and even the negative ones about the AV. Doesn't bother me. To each his own so to speak.

Do you have any details about the Tahoe? 2WD or 4x4? 4.8 or 5.3?

All does sound really good and the cosmetically things are fixed quickly, new tires are as well no big deal.

Go and buy that lottery ticket and do not forget about your forum friends. ;-)

Another update. Listed my AV on CL and the first guy that saw it today said he would give me my asking price of $8k. The credit union said we could have the title mailed here within 5 business days after pay off. The guy is willing to wait. He is a local fireman and we know a chief together and we know we can trust each other. I called the lady with the 02 Tahoe and she agreed on $5500 for hers and is willing to wait for my transaction to go through. It looks like it is a go to get the Tahoe. :)
