Tranny Cooler Fan??

Here's a pic of where my transmission cooler is installed, it's basically trapped against the AC condenser and the horizontal bar in front of it, it's 11" X 11" for those that have asked!! Does anyone know what the sensor is for that is mounted on the horizontal bar just to the right of the tranny cooler?

My cooler w/fan radiator is too big for my plans, going to install one without a fan and offset it on passenger side to take advantage of the AC fan pulling air through it.

So, here we go on the pics!!

To start, I have a 11" X 11" tranny cooler so I bought a generic 10" electric fan off of Ebay, suppose to put out 1250CFM for $25. Also bought a gm aux fan harness off of Ebay, part # 88880045 for $10. And last but not least, a Pilot brand LED tipped switch for $5.

Now I am just seeing if this is gonna be any benefit to towing for when the tranny temps get a bit too high and I wanna cool it off quicker than on its own, so for now everything you see is basically temporarily installed, if it does me no good, I will use it on something else!

So basically the fan comes with some removable little feet that mount on the side of the fan, so to take up the space of the feet from the mounting flange of the tranny cooler, I took some solid rubber blocks (gonna get solid plastic if this works to replace them), drilled holes through them and stuck zipties through the holes and through the holes in the mounting tab of the tranny cooler to hold the fan to the cooler.

Next, when I had the tranny cooler installed by my transmission guy a couple years ago, instead of them using the skinny zipties they use to install a cooler to the radiator, they reused the cross bar that the old smaller stock tranny cooler mounted to to basically trap the tranny cooler to the AC condenser (actually worked very well, didn't move at all!! But now with the fan installed in front of the cooler, I had to make some extension brackets to kick the cross bar out in front of the fan to do the same as before, to trap the fan and cooler again!

Also, there is a sensor that is on the cross bar and because I was kicking the cross bar out farther away from the radiator, I decided to make a bracket to hold the sensor closer to the original stock location. Second to last pic is finished product installed and the last pic is to show just how much room there is while even kicking the cross bar out, I didn't wanna cut anything up that was stock or even drill any holes at all!

So next was to install the GM aux fan harness I bought off Ebay, I am waiting on my electric fan setup and blackbear harness to show up for a permanent location of the aux relay but for now I mounted it up in front of the battery, sharing a bolt with a brace.

The harness is simple, 4 wires to connect up (sorry no pics of the harness, my wife had the camera when I was at that phase, I can help whoever decides to do this to there truck), but there is a ground wire that I attached to the bolt holding the relay, a red wire with a built in fusible link that I attached to the main power supply for the fuse block in the engine compartment (second pic), another red wire (no fusible link) that gives power to the fan from the relay, and a purple wire that goes to the switch to activate the relay.

I bought a Pilot brand switch with a LED in the tip that lets you know when the power is on to the fans so you don't leave it on all the time (can't hear the fan at all while in the car, just outside), all I did was make a bracket out of the same angle that I used for the crossbar extensions and piggy backed it on the side of my brake controller out of the way. For power for the switch light, there is a black box to the left of the brake pedal that I took the cover off of and found a power spade that only has power when the key is in the on position so that it will automatically turn off when I turn the truck off so that I don't forget and drain the battery. As for the ground, I just shared a ground with the alarm in my truck.

Pretty simple install, now I just need to do some testing and see if there is any benefit at all to having this fan!

I was checking out your post on the auxiliary fan for your transmission cooler. I bought the same fan, and harness, for my A/C condenser. I am curious where exactly to hook up the wires. I would like the fan to come on auto when the AC compressor kicks on. Any thoughts? Would you mind emailing me? I signed up to this forum just to PM you, of course, I can start contributing now as I have done a lot of fixes on my Tahoe. I bought it new 11 years and 160k miles ago!

All you have to do is hook it all up like i did for my trans cooler fan install except for the wire that I ran into the cab for the switch you will want to find the A/C wire in the engine compartment and tap into it for the trigger power instead of the switch!! That way every time you turn on your A/C, the fan will turn on at the same time!! Check this link out and go to my post #34 and take a look at the last pic of the 5 to see how I tapped into my A/C trigger wire for my electric fans, this would work perfect for your application!! http://www.tahoeyukonforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9400&page=10

There were 3 green wires within that bundle that were green, so I took a multimeter to each one to find the one that had power only when the A/C was on!! One had power all the time, no matter what, the second one never had power, and the 3rd and correct one only activated when the AC was on (that's the one you need!!).

Are you using the fan just for your A/C?
