Well my transmission decided to take a hard sh*t today! :party33:

It's been acting just fine lately, no slippage, no clunks, no skipped gears, no issues shifting out of park, nothing... But then this morning it all hit the fan:

I shifted out of park and into reverse, normal. But then I noticed that it wasn't moving at all when I let off the brake, so I check my parking brake, it was fine. I got out to make sure nothing was obstructing the tires, nothing. Got back in, shifted out of park again, still no noises etc. As soon as I gave it a little gas though, I HEARD THE WORST GRINDING NOISE OF MY LIFE. I think to myself "transmission"... So I moved it about 20 feet, and the noise persisted, a high pitched grinding in both forward and reverse. So I turned it off and fired it up again a few minutes later, shift to reverse, BOOM!(and I mean BOOM) A massive clunk ensued, followed by persistent grinding/whining in all drive gears INCLUDING park too.

I'm going to say a instantaneously fractured sunshell has something to do with this, any ideas? (yes, I know transmission questions are the hardest most retarded questions out there...) Also, you think she's worth saving? (should it be a pricey rebuild)

It'll be about $1000 to tear down and rebuild using std upgrades ...

What would you call 'standard upgrades'? I've never really dealt with aftermarket improvements etc.

And as much as I wish I could, I just can't do this myself. I don't have the means or the time. I've always wanted to do a tranny rebuild but winter isn't the best time for me to do that...

Unfortunately, I'm gonna have to get my bank account sexually assaulted by a shop. (hopefully not)

Yeah it sounds like the sunshell. if you continue to run it you will do further damage. An this point a full rebuild is in order. Mine was $2550 at a tranny shop and include all new friction material, new electric servos, upgraded piston, boost valve among other things. I already had the upgraded sunshell in it. Typically upgrades are parts that have been redisigned in later tranny years to address weak points in the system. the upgrades can be applied to all the trannies to benefit from.

Okay so I've been looking at parts and such on the internet and so far this is what I'm looking at spec'ing it to:

beast sunshell
transogo aluminum pistons
new friction materials
new servos
new boost valve
replace check balls and such
corvette servo
any other revised/4L65E parts i don't know of yet...
I'm on the fence about a shift kit, I was looking at the TransGo HD-2. Is it really worth it if I won't be removing any torque management, I feel like it's useless to just have TM fighting the firmer shifts constantly. Any input on that guys?
Also, was the $2550 with removal and install of the tranny, Sunlit?

yes the shift kit will change things because the tranny operates on fixed info so to speak. It would not fight the TM as you think it does. it will still do the same shifts under the same circumstances and such but a mechanical part at the end of that control circuit as it were will just institute slightly different effect in the end effect. FYI I did not gave a transgo kit installed nor a corvette servo installed but the upgraded parts did more than enough to improve over the original design.

And that was with in-out labor with the r&r of transfer case too. While it is out replace any seal external to t-case and degrease it to. I did not have time to do that on mine. Oh and since tranny is our replace your rear main engine seal as well. my price included the engine seal work.

Alright, well it looks like I may be doing some more research on the shift kit before I delve into that. I planned on having it looked at today, but the only shop I trust is closed till monday so I'll have to wait probably a week or so before I find out the damage. Thanks for the info guys, once I start with the rebuild I'll post detail of exactly what happens. And it looks like I'll be doing the rear main seal and the t case too :waytogo:

If you're going to get a 4L60E from Monster, why not pony up a few bucks more and drop in a 4L80E? What else would be needed to upgrade?

I believe the harness and control module are different. Anybody know the specifics?

Actually, just looked it up. I think the 80 is a lot more work than its worth for me.

I was actually just reading about them.... It appears that if you get any major problems you're SOL. I'm looking at performabuilt transmissions too now after reading about them on performance trucks.net. Anyone have experience with these?

lots of guys are running them..seels to be a very well built trans and very few have problems

I was actually seriously considering them until I got quoted for repairs today. I took it to a guy who knows what he's doing, he looked at it and said my planetary gears pretty much fractured and exploded... great.

So I will be getting a full rebuild performed
-new revised GM sunshell
-new electronics
-(possibly) 5 pinion planetaries
-new friction materials all around
-any other revised parts etc...
anything I'm forgetting?

I'm looking at $1750 for all this including tow and labor.
