4 15'' XL Build *Updated*

Sold my lvl 4's/lvl 5 coils. Picked up 4 new 15'' XL's. Built a new box, its ~15 cubes tuned to 30hz with 4 6'' aero's. Fiberglassed and resin'd the whole inside. Still using the RD D9 @ .5 ohms, subs are probably seeing ~5600 rms. Taking a 12 hour drive with a bunch of people from the northwest down to autorama 2011 in cali. Meca, db drag and iasca i believe are having competitions. Took a quick vid, camera doesn't pick up everything, need to break these in they are very stiff.

I was debating on 2 18'' XL's or Lvl 5's, or do the 4 15'' XLs. More cone area ftw so i took the 4 XL's

yea i wanted great lows but didnt wanna take up the hole cargo area just yet.
off rusty's specs the box will be 7.5 cubes tunder to 34hz.. should get some awesome lows in the box off a sd5000. with a vcm i'll set voltage at 14.9.
at 14,4 the sd5000 puts out 6500rms so the subs should see that at all times(give or take a little due to box rise) until next year when they get a sd8000's on them :)

Have you ran the sd5k for a while now or did you just get it? I have a bunch of buddies who have been running the 8k's and all of em have gone up in smoke. One guy had it go into protect and he opened it up and had bad soldering job. Other 2 guys both of theirs wouldn't turn off, and after that they finally blew. People are now saying they are better off as burp amps not daily. My friends that had the bad soldering, he got it fixed under warranty and sold it and now he has the sd16k coming in any day now. just wondering your experience with em.

Might as well update this thread instead of making a new one. Few changes, I got a bigger amp its a Digital Designs m4a, its rated 5900 at 11.9v at 1 ohm. I'm running it at .5 daily.

People have clamped 7-9k out of theirs, very very underrated. Im in the process of deadening my roof and I have a new box in there its 16 cubes tuned to 38hz with 256sq inches of port, everything is rounded over and subs are flush mounted. The box is getting painted when I get some time to pull it out.

Sick build man cant wait to see the new box all painted. Question for you though. Im getting ready to build a box for my sub, its only a single ssd12 wired to 800w, but how do you go about designing your box/port to be tuned properly? Do you just know how to do it or is there a site you use to help make all the right calculations?

I would do sub up, port back. Usually the loudest in SUV's. And to design boxes, there are a few sites. An easy calculator that is pretty accurate that i've used multiple times is

http://reaudio.com/box.php

There are also premade designs here:

http://www.caraudio.com/forums/enclosure-design-construction-help/137804-free-box-plans.html

I know the perfect size box for 4 15's for my truck so i just calculate my volume and use the12volt.com to calculate my port. The recommended ported enclosure for a 12'' SSD is "Ported box: 1.8-2.5 cuft @ 33Hz"

You could do maybe this free design and just mount the sub on top of the box instead of on the front as its shown. This is 2.5 cubes tuned to 32hz.

Thanks alot Jae and Ryan..... gonna have to give it a shot. The box is gonna have to be slightly different since im not just building it and slapping it in the cargo area. Gonna be glassing it into the side of the truck on where the factory sub is. Definitely gonna give this site a look though. Much appreciated.

Sounds good. If your gonna do it that way id just suggest trying to find your volume somehow, and use the12volt.com and do a single aero port.
