Operating Temps

New 5.3L Z71 (2026) Tahoe here in Northern NV...
Installed Range DFM Disabler, J&L Oil Separator, and changed oil at ~1,200 miles...like the rig so far.

Question on Operating Temps...
Old 2015 5.3L Suburban I replaced rarely had Engine or Trans Temps over ~190F...even after 225k miles
Trying to get used to having Coolant Temp and Oil Temps available...vs just Engine Temp...

What is the normal/expected operating range of this Engine?
Currently around town, I see ~215F Coolant and 205F-ish Oil Temps...

And...nice to see the 10L80 Temp around 150F-170F...was concerned with earlier pre-'25 version trans temps.

I believe the fans are not even commanded to go more than 10% until above 221 and with AC use its even higher. I was not a fan of such high temps so I tweaked mine to kick on much sooner so now im able to maintain around 208-210 and the fans really step in to bring temps down. 220-up is just way too high for these but thats how they got them from the factory.

GM (and most other automakers as well) prefer:

*COOLANT temps OVER 212F improve efficiency.
Coolant temps over 221F are cause for concern unless you are sure that your coolant cap holds 15psi or better, and even then ...
The cost for coolant temps as low as 185F is not more than 4MpG. Experienced tuners typically aim for coolant temps between 203F-212F when possible.

*MOTOR OIL temps OVER 212F improve efficiency. Most motor oils live comfortably at 239F for thousands of miles with no longevity / durability penalty.
Motor oil temps over 239F increase oil consumption measurably, consumption rates increase as motor oil temps go up.
Most motor oils are not meant to operate properly past 248F unless specifically engineered to withstand it.

*ATF temps OVER 212F improve efficiency.
ATF temps over 230F were downright dangerous to Dex3. Although Dex6 can withstand ATF temps as high as 266F,
ATF temp sensors are never in the hottest possible spot, so if ATF reports @ 266F, some of your ATF is hotter, turning to varnish and hardening seals.

Look up the OE thermostat opening temp to see what the minimum temp should be. If the thermostat is working properly the temp will go up from there, depending on the condition of the cooling system.

My 2021 Yukon Denali, 6.2L runs 210F Coolant - rock steady. Transmission ranges from ~160-170F (normal, flat highway, 60mph) and as high as ~200F towing that 5500lb trailer up a 10mile mountain incline.

A week spot while towing showed up during stop-go (literally 1mph for almost 40minutes) going up the grapevine north of LA for last 25minutes of that.... transmission temps slowly climbed to 226F (over those 40minutes) by the time we got past the stop-go, and then cooled back down as soon as we got air-flow / 50mph+.
