Is a parish basically y'all's name for a county?

I always assumed, for whatever reason, it was a French influence. The obvious Church connection of 'parish' never occurred to me in this context.

It was from the French influence which is still very strong in the southern part of the state. The French were predominately Catholic. I heard that parts of South Carolina used to have parishes. And Alaska uses boroughs.
