Rotors have scratches. Normal?

Is that normal wear and tear or is something scratching the rotors?

I can’t hear anything bad but wondering if it should be taken care of. What do you think? It’s a 2021 Escalade. Brake Pads are ok. Calipers are rusty. Car was probably sitting a long time somewhere.

looks like something got logded in between the pad and rotor, perhaps a small pebble or rock

It’s in the front on both sides. One rear wheel had it too and they had to replace the sensor and the brake pads coz it was creating a squeaky noise

? So this was a before picture? before they did the work or after>?
or do you mean the rear looked just this and they fixed it?

The latter. The rear looked like this and they fixed because there was a squeaking sound. In the front it looks like this on the picture as well but no squeaking sound whatsoever. Just wondering if that is going to be an issue or not

shouldn't be but I would keep an eye on it or pull the wheel off and take a better look, run your finger across the rotor (when it is cool) and see if it feels smooth or not
if you touch that rotor after a drive it will burn you like grabbing a hot pan out of the oven.

To answer your question, no that’s not normal.

Is it a big deal if you’re not towing or driving it hard? Probably not.

But, is your life or someone in front of you worth not just getting new rotors and pads?

Could you please explain why this would impact braking?

Instead of two flat surfaces rubbing each other off (heheh),
the pad is goring / gouging the rotor.
The gouged rotor is at an increased likelihood of warping from increased temperatures.
Other possibilities include the pad breaking into pieces, or the rotor cracking ...

Study the braking market for the past 100 years. No one sells spiked / cleated brake pads.
If your pads are trying to Kreuger your rotors, at least replace the pads.

Marky kind of answered, but specifically disc brakes job are to turn kinetic energy (your vehicle moving) into heat through the action of friction between the pads and rotors.

As soon as a scenario develops that removes the contact surface area (rust, warping, lodged debris) or clamping strength & uniformity (stuck pistons, stuck caliper slides) you remove some of that conversion ability. The front brakes generally do 75% of the stopping, so problems up front are disproportionately more important than the rears.

Generally once rust or abrasion occurs on the rotor, that flat smooth surface of the rotor turns to sandpaper and just grinds away the pad. That situation you have will never resolve itself without replacing the rotors (I don’t even know if they turn these any more). It’ll just grind the pads down forever.

Everyone’s finances, personal commitment to safety, multiplied by how much that’s affecting stopping results if it will get fixed. For me, I drive with kids and the finances don’t matter much to me - so I’d replace them, at least when I rotate or bought next set of tires.
