Need ordering process explained.

Hi all,

I'm a newbie here and have found a lot of helpful information on this site. What I need help with is the whole ordering/tracking/delivery process explained.

This is our situation. We recently sold our 2021 Z71 Tahoe (Couldn't pass up the $$$ to be made). We then began the search for a 2022 High Country Tahoe. We are approved for supplier pricing as well. We found a local (Oklahoma) dealer that had the exact (Pretty much) color (White) and options that we were looking for. But as we all know they were asking $8,000 over MSRP and wouldn't even think of honoring Supplier Pricing. But said they would order us one and sell for Supplier. We aren't in a hurry for it so we said ok and placed the order on 4/8. High Country Tahoe - Iridescent Pearl White with Deluxe Package (Nothing extra). Would someone mind explaining what happens next? I've seen something about GM acceptance??? Build Dates??? Tracking??? TPW??? LOL. Thanks again. Any help would be appreciated. On a side note I've NEVER ordered a vehicle in my life. Much less during a Pandemic and Chip shortage!

The process is mathematically technical. It is not meant to be a bridge between you, the ultimate consumer and the factory. By that I mean a dealer can take 1001 customer sold orders for a model line. The dealer only earns a finite amount of that model based on prior year's sales rate. There could be hundreds of customers in that example that have zero chance of ever seeing that model based on the dealers prior sales volume. Add in the fact that High Country package is very constrained, way less availability than customers that want it, and you will probably never see your 2022 model. GM will not accept your order because you are not the customer, the dealer is. The dealer has to have earned a sufficent quanity to honor your order. Some dealers might put a low profit deal on the bottom of the pile and never look at it again or not tell you about the constraints that stop your order from acceptance. I would have a face to face with the inventory manager to see where you stand.

altona we have had the face to face conversation with the inventory manager that's who ordered it. We understand all of the restraints. I guess I didn't ask my question correctly. I would just like to understand the steps it goes through when ordered. I'm not saying our order will ever go through or not. Would just like to know the process.

Been waiting 12 weeks for my Tahoe and it’s sitting in Midlothian with no ETA. This ordering stuff really sucks.

It’s pretty simple actually, if the ordering manager has an allocation for your Tahoe you’ll know if it’s accepted within 1-2 weeks because GM will notify them of any constraints and if something needs dropped on your order. If u drop those things, boom accepted by GM code 2000. if u don’t it sits at 1000 status and the dealer gives the allocation to someone else willing to compromise.

I believe I was asking how the ordering process works??? But your answers are spot on. EVERYONE that orders a Tahoe is not going to get it because they are late to the party. Got it! What were we thinking even trying to order one. If they tell us tomorrow it got cancelled, you know what? Life will still go on. But Yes, feel good info is exactly what I was looking for.

Your order is placed in the system. Your dreamer should have given you a confirmation order number. That way you make sure it was actually put into the system not just your name on a list. Then you wait until your inventory manager calls you. For example your high country might be number 24 in line. The dealer gets allocation every week but you will find that the allocation rotates. One week issue different trim léveles and different cars. If my magic your number is next in line with the dealership they will telll you exactly how your order can be placed.

The 2022 cut off is in a month. So if you don’t get your order accepted with a build date then welcome to 2023 build models.

Thank you Elise 201424! This was info I was actually looking for. Yes we actually watched as the manager placed the order in the system. We went step by step with him.

What did he say about their allocations and/or what was the expected timeline to be?

Not trying to repeat some of the other posts...but all of the other info isn't relevant if you're never likely to get to the actual build/delivery stage. If your order has already been accepted by GM meaning the dealer had an allocation they were willing to allow you to use - then you can move forward...

Debbie downers they may be - but it's the reality of the GM ordering process

Not a popular idea on here - but I'd place at a minimum two orders at different dealers to better your chances of getting a vehicle in the next 12 months....if you're fine waiting then a snapshot of the process is below....

- You place the order (done) and have obtained the order #
- The order has to be accepted by GM (biggest hurdle - once you get past this stage it may still take another 3-6 months, but hopefully the end result is a vehicle whereas anything before this stage is wishful thinking)
- The six months may seem long, but there are numerous trucks built in Nov/Dec timeframe that still haven't made it to the dealer
- Once the order is accepted a TPW (target production week) is established
- It may take a few weeks before the TPW is set
- TPW will probably be anywhere from 3-10 weeks out
- The TPW can slide sooner/later - you can imagine what most are doing now
- I had an order accepted the 2nd week of Feb with a TPW of 3/14, then 3/28, then 4/18, and now 5/9
- Once it's built, it may be delayed at the plant if it needs an add-on or is missing "chips" that GM doesn't want to classify as retrofit for later
- Oklahoma should be truck ride from Arlington - so it'll sit at one of the GM lots (Midlothian is the most popular) until it gets a ride
- I currently have one that has been sitting for four (4) weeks
- If it's a train ride, then additional opportunities for issues as it has to catch a train to a regional lot/dispatch and then catch a ride finally to the dealer
- When it arrives the dealer may not tell you it arrived and/or they'll sell it to somebody offering the $8k over sticker
- Or they tell you. "sorry" but we aren't going to be able to honor our deal as the market is too strong for us to offer it to you at supplier pricing - we'll sell it to you at $5k over if you finance at least 90% of the selling price with us
- It arrives at the dealer to only have significant damage from being transported
- Hopefully the dealer will actually tell you about the damage
- The tahoe arrives and it has a 2nd row bench instead of buckets or has the 5.3 instead of the diesel
- Although the previous five seem far fetched, there are examples on this forum and others of similar instances occurring
- If the dealer comes through on your end, you'll be able to buy the high country at supplier and sell it immediately for a $10k profit if the market stays anywhere close to what it's at now
- at any point during this process, you can message GM online, call GM, or ask your dealer for order updates, there are build codes (see below) that may or may not be relayed to you during this time... the bulk of which you never hear about because the order sits at 1000, is accepted at 3000 and then it's at 4300 if you're lucky or more than likely 4B00

Thank you todayusay. Again this is ALL I was looking for! I’m not looking for someone to tell me our Tahoe is/isn’t going to be built. All of the reasons the dealer is going to screw us over, etc. , etc. Just an explanation of how the ordering process is supposed to work. Plain and simple. Yes I totally understand times are not normal. And there are MANY things that can happen. Again, THANK YOU!

If you have an order #, ask the dealer to send you the GM WorkBench invoice. This will tell you everything in your order configuration.

I'd try to get this sent immediately, before you're even assigned a TPW.

How do you know it's still just sitting there?

I called Chevrolet customer support and that is what I was told...which makes sense b/c i know it's been built (window stickers only populate when they are "complete") and the dealer told me it was at 4300. Dealer also never gave me an ETA though...was given an ETA of 4/14 by Linton on gminsider a couple days after it was built...and then Chevy support told me 4/24 when i called monday...My dealer has already reported it as sold so Linton can't pull any more info on it...I even received the customers satisfaction survey 2 weeks ago. thankfully they haven't asked for us to go ahead and "pay for it"

Messaging online was actually somewhat beneficial back in Jan/Feb - they'd give decent info and the status codes...but they've changed their approach since then...my experience a couple weeks before it was built is that messaging is now as vague as possible and once it's built, they immediately default to ask your dealer...

granted it may not be there but that's my best guess

Did you ever use that CN tracking site and enter your VIN? Was your truck ever bayed?

Haven't received a bayed status so going to guess no - and I'm only about 5 hrs away from Dallas so it shouldnt be going by rail (unless that tracking site is more than rail)
