Foglight HID Problem

I Purchased a Set Of HID's For My 07 Tahoe From a Reliable Dealer On The Forum, Had them installed for maybe 3 months already and just Noticed That My Housing and inside of my fogs are Being Melted By The HIDs. Does anyone else on here have an issue like this, and if so What could i do to remedy this? i urchased Hids for the Headlights and they are still Perfect. . . This Sucks. . .I Deff. Gotta Get New Foglights Now. . .

I don't have HIDs and haven't been interested in them since I learned there are issues with legalities, but from what I know, this is a common problem

And I'm curious... 35w?

yes there are several people on here with that problem, and im sure they will chime in. some have purchased more housings and others have used LEDs instead of HIDs. It sucks for those who have the round housings because im in the Z71 with the squared housing and i have no problems at all.

Here's the deal. If you are going to run HIDs in the fogs, you can't leave them on for long periods of time. Also, is the housing melting or just turning yellow? I had an HID bulb that was off center when I installed it, and it melted one assembly so bad that the back of it collapsed and almost caused a fire. I actually had plastic drips coming down from behind my bumper.
I am in the process now of switching out my melted fog lights and replacing with new OEM housings and going with HID’s one more time. This time I am going to install the bulbs before I put the housings in to make sure they are centered in correctly. I am hoping this will work for me this time, because other people are not having any issues with Hide’s in the fogs.

Another option for you is to go with a 5202 LED bulb. They are expensive and they really don’t do anything as far as lighting goes, but they would be just as bright as OEM bulbs and would look just like an HID as far as color goes. You would need a 7000K head light bulb to match.

A lot of posts about this. Plenty of people will tell you that a 35W HID kit will actually run cooler than the stock bulbs. The stock bulbs are 27 watts, so a 35W bulb is putting almost 30% more power in the same space. You can do as Conor suggests and use them sparingly, use a colored or LED bulb, or use a 25 watt HID kit. Otherwise, expect a short life from your stock housings.

yup... should be getting my LED 5202 on tuesday,... ill try to get pictures up even though im sure people here have them already..

fast 55 got it down right,.. 25 watt or led is the way to go for round fogs.

I had the same problem and had to buy 3 different foglights. I melted one and broke the clips on the other 2 because I siliconed them. Now that I have the RIGHT size bulbs I have had no problems. I use them everyday and everynight and the work great.

There's another source on E-bay now that has them for less plus free shipping. As far as the Putco's, I've had the "ion spark white" bulbs for a few months with no issues. I tried looking up a stock replacment bulb and what I find listed is termed "halogen", so I'm not sure the stock bulb's aren't halogen. The Putco bulbs should be the same wattage so I don't why you would have had damage from them. Here is a link to Spencer's for the 25 watt HID kit. It looks to be very high quality but expensive. What size bulb did you use? You should be using 5202's.

my 880 hid melted the housing but i put the 5202 bulb in and dont c any more damage

Hey bro, if you can try to snap some pics when you get the LEDs installed that would be great. I am now considering changing my mind to go with an LED, but my primary concern is having them match my head lights.
Modded said that the LEDs didnt quite match his 6000K which is what I have. I am wondering if it would match better match if I do LED's in the fogs and change out my headlights to 7000K instead of 6K.
Any thoughts on that?

Correct. However, my drivers side light was installed correctly and it is still working, but it is pretty burnt inside. At first it turned yellow but them turned kind of a brownish yellow color inside the housing. I will try to get some pics up soon of how bad that one side got. I cant believe it didnt start a fire.

ill get pics up as soon as i can. im definitely concerned to match them to the headlights...but it has alot to do what kind of led exactly. maybe if i have time on my hands ill do a led to hid and to stock comparison. pics coming soon.... promise.

I had HID's in my truck when I got it and the stock housings were melted to a nasty looking blob in the back as said before I can't believe there wasn't a fire.
Went and installed some cheap fog lights from a local auto store that have actual glass lenses and no melting problem. It just involved building a custom mounting bracket in the back. It helps to have been a welder/fabricator by trade in the past. But i would say that as soon as you up the wattage you are going to create more heat and when I asked about new stock housings at the local GM dealer his first question was "what did you melt the other ones?". His comment was that as soon as you go with a higher wattage with the stock housings you will melt them. He has the fog light sales to prove it at $148.00 a pop.

Darn, I wished I did a little more research before I purchased the HIDs for fogs. I changed the lows and DRLs this weekend- very happy. I also tested the fog HIDs; it was blazing hot and so I didn’t complete the install. Oh well, I guess I’ll use the ballast for the motorcycle.

I will have to wait until later the year to change the fogs to LEDs; I’ve been spending too much money accessorizing the Hoe, Beamer and motorcycle- the wife is close to the breaking point.

Hi, I was wondering if this is also a problem with the '05 models. I just got my hid's today and installed them in the headlights and I want to get the fog lights to match but I don't want to melt my housings.

I have no idea. You might want to try searching in the 2000-06 model section.
