Got the new valve body and wiring harness back into the 4L60E. Went to take her for a test drive to get the trans temp up to check for P1870 code/symptoms. Test drive didn't last long - noticed rotational noise coming from both front wheels that increased with speed and turning. My first thought was wheel bearings, but I replaced those less than 500 miles back.

Question - can bad front axles give the same symptoms as wheel bearings ? It's not the brakes, the sound doesn't stop when applying them.

If I decide to replace them, what is the best brand to go with ?

Thanks.
There’s nothing on the axles that I can think of that would make a grinding noise, there’s just CV joints that make more of a clunking sound when they go bad. Can you put it up on 4 jack stands, start it, put it in gear and go listen as the wheels turn? Don’t do it for long, don’t want to hurt the diff. Or put in in 2WD with the engine off and spin them by hand?

I spun the wheels and checked for play but found nothing out of the ordinary. I think I'll pull the wheels and make sure that the calipers aren't sticking on the pins. Thanks.

Back to that onstar discussion, I just called onstar from my Denali and they looked up my account and assured me the safety plan is still effective for my 2005 model. I looked on GM's website and don't see anything that would make me think otherwise and we get the monthly report for TP/oil chg etc so they are able to talk to it.

Interesting. I know my 02 became completely unusable and from what I’ve read, 03-05’s had to have a $200 adapter installed to communicate with the new system. I forget if you’ve already mentioned it- have you had it since new? If not, somebody must have installed the adapter after the system changed from analog to digital. Here’s the scoop:

“In April 2006, GM notified approximately 500,000 of their OnStar customers who had analog service that their service would be terminated effective December 31, 2007, because starting February 18, 2008 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) would no longer require US cell phone systems to operate in analog mode. Customers who purchased a prepaid, non-refundable, non-transferable 1-year OnStar Safe & Sound subscription were scheduled to receive an equipment upgrade. If the vehicle is from the 2003, 2004, or 2005 model year, an adapter costing approximately US$200 (includes a one-year subscription) can be installed at the customer's expense. If it is older, it will simply no longer be usable.[13] A law firm in Pennsylvania representing some of the affected customers sought to have a class certified for a class-action lawsuit for damages claimed in the cancellation of OnStar service.[14]

Just waiting on the pcv hose and I’ll be done for this weekend. New oil pressure sensor, put a new oring on the cam sensor, intake manifold gaskets, throttle body gasket,
new knock sensors and harness while I was replacing the valley cover gasket. Pretty easy really.

I was expecting to find a corroded rear knock sensor, they looked brand new. Ive had it for 50k though lol, somebody musta done these I guess.

Those sensors still look great. Are they AC Delcos?
