Are All Steering Wheels Misaligned (Not Centered)?

I was comparing more of the steering wheel centered in relationship to the driver seat.

maybe the Gangster Lobbyists paid all the manufacturers to do it.




if one looks, all RWD vehicles have this offset. i havent driven any FWD cars recently, so cant speak to them.
i'd think safety is why the steering wheels are offset(off center) in the RWD models. Something about how the steering column absorbs/deflects energy from frontal impacts.

but who knows.

I noticed this also on the 2015+, I think they did it to just have a larger center consol. I'm not sure this would bother me or not.

I've recently checked these cars and NONE of them have off-center steering wheels (in relation to the driver's seat): Toyota Sequoia, Toyota Tundra, BMW X5, Corvette, Ford Explorer. In fact, I've never seen an offset steering wheel in any vehicle except the GM Tahoe/Suburban variants. Not sure about the Expy.

Can you take a pic of the steering wheel in relation to the driver's seat. For me at least, that's where it makes more of a difference as your arms will have to compensate. We're not talking about a lot, but the OCD in me "sees" it.

The steering wheel cover that I added is installed off center, which is a little misleading. ...but here's what I got.

My Sienna, Highlander, and RAV4 are all centered as well. I'm guessing others aren't is so you can see the full instrument panel through the steering wheel or maybe the manf's feel more people steer with their right knee while they are holding their cell phones while driving.

I just stopped by a local Chevy/GMC dealer and took these pics. Both the Yukon XL Denali and the Suburban are 2017's, and both have steering wheels that are very noticeably off center.

Now that I've seen it I can't unsee it!

I've never owned a VW/Audi. I would say the Mercedes is just as bad as GM, both are about 1-2 inches off. But I guess it's never really bothered many GM truck owners, so maybe it's just the OCD getting the better of me.

You are correct, the steering wheel is dead centered to the instrument panel, but not to the seat and thus by extension, to the driver. It's almost as if GM decided to widen the interior cabin of these vehicles but left all the mechanical guts (engine, transmission, drive train, in the sam position.

Ha, yes he couldn't believe it either and said he had never noticed it before. The manager came out to look at it too. He was surprised and said that he was going to call the GM representative for this area and ask him.

Later he laughed and said something similar to what I said earlier, that he's a little pissed that he's now seen it and hopes he can forget about it next time he's driving one.

Adding a pic of mine. I know they are all the same but I took mine from the exact (well, eyeballed) center of the headrest with the seat all the way down. Doesnt look nearly as skewed...
