What is the purpose of Jute like padding behind fender on firewall

I notice a fibrous padding behind the fender and body like in picture. Is there a specific name to it? what is its function?

I believe it is a sound deadening pad, my Denali has it and has the sound deadening rpo code

That was my first guess as well. Sound deadening and I cannot think of any other reasoning.

I'd think that would just cause more rust issues. Jute just sucks up moisture, and holds it.

Mine is like the type of carpet pad that's under the trunk carpet in most cars. Don't know what that's called?

I sure wish my 2019 SLT Yukon had MORE sound deadening material. It is the loudest and roughest riding GM product I’ve ever owned!!

agree... mine soaks up water coming out of cowl drain and seeps into passenger side carpet area (through some gap behind fender)... that's why I am exploring this area.

Weird, never had any water or moisture issues inside mine.

I can see the jute sticking into the front door jambs when I open the doors. I'm sure that area sees water especially when I run it through the carwash about once a week
