Upgrade OEM Transmission Cooler

I wanted to update this one last time for the temps I have been seeing:

Morning: 80F/70% Hum ambient, trans temp runs about 160F

Afternoon time: 95F/ 85% hum ambient, trans runs about 170F

I just added a PML deep trans pan which so far is dropping the temps about 10F.

Keep in mind this is at highway speeds so cooling is much greater. When I hit stop and go traffic the temps will rise roughly 10-20F depending on how long I am in it but top out there.

This morning was the first morning I drove with the trans pan on and was running 150F @80F/65% hum ambient. I had the blessing of having to do stop and go for about 10 minutes this morning (idiot drivers) and maxed out at 170F.

At this point when I start towing, the temps are going to be what they are going to be.

Summary: with upgraded aux cooler and trans pan I see about a 20-40F drop in overall temps in any condition/environment.

If the fluid hits 200F or slightly above it is only for a very short period of time and is cooled back down quickly (trans housing never goes above 160F) so I am not going to worry about it. I will change the fluid more often (every 30K).

20-40*F drop seems pretty solid to me.

Hey Guys,
First off great thread, love the photo's. We just bought a used 2010 Yukon 3 weeks ago with the HD towing package so we would have a more pleasant towing experience when going camping. We live in Colorado Springs and have to contend with hot summer days, cold winters, and high altitude.

Our camper only weighs 4200# fully loaded and naturally I assumed we would be fine. Went camping last weekend and on the way home (all tanks were empty) the temps were lower 96F and the transmission went as high as 228. When we were driving around in town it was like we weren't using first gear at all. It took a long time to get moving. I brought it back to the dealership and they said everything looked fine. They also said that it's not uncommon for the Denali's and Escalade's to come back from mountain passes with the transmission temp lights on. I want this truck to last for ever and really think I need to add a bigger tranny cooler. I would really prefer the Tru-Cool, but in the winter we can have whole days below 0. Whats too cold? I don't want a thermostat that keeps it at 185 either.

i got the 40k GVW cooler w cold ass michigan winters...towing a small 3k lb boat up north and in traffic during summer gets me at about 150° F in the summer when its about 85-90°F out...in the winters, sub zero temps she sits at about 95-100°F....been like this for about 2-3 years and no issues...

w this cooler i dont think iv ever gotten it to see over 160°F...even hot rodding it around w the blower.

Yes, but, keep in mind you might be blocking airflow to radiator too, even tho not sure how much it would affect it... i had an idea to route the trans cooler down a bit, under the fake denali grill on the lower portion of the bumper, and drill holes to control its air flow.

Stock Dexron replacement when i did the cooler..its due for a flush.

Anyone have the OEM PN for the cooler lines? My NBS had a factory cooler, but my NNBS Tahoe does not :chair:

I wanted to do a quick write up for those of us that have the OEM trans cooler on their NNBS.

I wanted to find a solution that utilizes the stock lines and is mostly a bolt in application with little to no modifications needed, and it seems I have achieved that.

Here are the parts you will need:

Only modification needed is to cut out the plastic area in the picture below. This will allow the OEM lines to be pushed lower for better fitment.

Mounting is a little tricky and have to drill some holes in the OEM bracket. I am not finished but this is what I did to get it in until I have time to get something more concrete:

Because there are quite a few more fittings needed to make the connection, the cooler needs to be mounted up a higher than the brackets would allow. Also why I need to cut the extra plastic out of the way to drop the lines down a bit further.

I just used extra washers to create that offset between the bracket and the cooler. I will make some custom brackets at some point but it is pretty rigid right now without the top of the cooler being retained.

So if you dont want to use extra washers for the offset you can not order the Derale bracket kit and make your own. But for 20 bucks its good to get it mounted and running until making something custom.

This Derale worked because the connection spacing is the same as OEM 11". I like that its painted black and is thicker rather than longer. Its 37K BTU so is fairly close to the tru cool 40K max.

Here is finished product, last shot shows from underneath where I had to cut the plastic away for the lines.

Does the towing package option offer a bigger cooler??? Why not just get a towing package cooler, and GM parts ?
