my 2006 Yukon XL Denali is starting the first signs of slipping between third and fourth.

I can buy a core in my area for $50-$100, and I found a rebuilder who says he can rebuild one for $700 all in. That includes parts.

I would like to upgrade parts get a faster shift so the clutches wear less each shift and just get an all-around more robust transmission.

here's my question:

1. given that I have a 2006 Yukon XL Denali, the all-wheel-drive, can someone guide me on which core I should purchase? I would like to have the transmission fully built and ready to just pull right in. So I can't have the swap require some parts off of my currently installed a transmission. I need it to be a standalone full complete swap which I can do in my shop in the morning.

and the second question I guess,

2. can anybody recommend a bombproof kit for my Denali XL? Something I can just buy and give to the transmission builder.

Which tranny do you have? 4L60E or 4L80E? Look on your RPO build tag for an M and 2 digits. For example mine is M32 on the build sticker which is a 4L65-E (a heavy duty 4L60-E).

His 2006 Denali xl should have the 4L65E. That's they came with from the factory. Mine did. None of the 2006 Denali trimmed Yukons that i know of had the 4L80E from the factory because that was only an option on the 2500s. Which were non Denali trims.

My RPO is also M32 but according to my RPO code list it's a 4L60E. Here's what the list says:

M32 16625 P TRN M TRANSMISSION AUTO 4 SPD, HMD, 4L60-E, ELECTRONIC, HD 990727

What information do you have that says M32 is a 4L65E ?

@rockola1971 thanks for making me look into the info on the 4L65E. After a bit of Googling, I've found some interesting stuff. It seems you're right about RPO code M32. I found a few places that stated the standard 4L60E is RPO M30 and the 4L60E HD/ 4L65E is M32. Here's the RPO code list on the M30:

M30 16623 P TRN M TRANSMISSION AUTO 4 SPD, HMD, 4L60-E, ELECTRONIC 970424

Here's more info on the differences incorporated into the 4L65E:

4l65E/4l60e-HD(4l60eHD was only named as such for 1 year, it was used in the very 1st 6.0l LQ4 325hp/370 lb/ft torque 1/2 ton truck applications such as the Sierra C3 AWD truck(for 2002 renamed the Sierra Denali)
5 pinion planetary gearsets
-hardened/shot peened turbine, stator and output shafts
-hardened sun gear
-hi-energy clutch packs
-extra clutch in 3-4 pack
-recalibrated valvebody
-heavy duty low/reverse roller clutch

This does make me feel more confident that since I now know I have the 4L65E and it has also been rebuilt by the PO with a shift kit so it has low miles on it, and I installed a Corvette servo, it might hold up to a blower after all!

yup i have m32

guess we have the 4l65e with all those goodies.

the builder i found for 675$ canadian dollars says he puts HD clutch packs in and goes through everything.

I called another trans shop today and they said NOT to put a vette servo in because by the 4l60e much of the reason that hotrodders put a vette servo in everything was gone through improvements.

but he did say the weak point was the 3-4 clutch and something about a weak band and them something about a half inch valve.

Anyway, my plan is to go with the transfo shift kit, this .5" valve and thicker clutch packs that can handle the heat better. the transfo shift kit is supposed to take care of the lollygagging shift on the stock units.

the plan to buy a core has changed. the rebuilder says if i deliver at 7am he can have it all done by 4pm. So i will drop it and deliver it the evening before and be installing it by the next evening.

will take photos and post boys!

hey you have a Corvette servo? How is your 1-2 shift?

I was told by the transmission shop that if I requested a Corvette servo, my wife would make me take it out. Because the one to shift would be super jerky. He said that the 4L 60 E in my car took care of that and all I needed was a trans go kit

My fault gentleman. My 05 Yukon Denali has the 4L65-E. It my 2 02 Tahoes that have the M32 4L60E. When you have a 4L60E rebuilt it can be upgraded to the 4L65E specs. I ALWAYS put in Hi Energy Clutch kits in a 4L60/65. They last and take a beating while towing.
