2018 Tahoe 5.3

Girlfriend was driving home from work and all of sudden she heard a clunk sound and the truck seemed to go into neutral. Revs up but no go. I got the help her and shut it off waiting a minute and started it and it moved a bit but as I sat there it would not move again. Shut it off for few minutes and started it up and was able to get it off the road to a safe spot. Seemed to drive fine no weird sounds. We left it parked and will go back later with less traffic to tow it home.

Is the tranny done it any other ideas.

I just changed the fluid and filter less than 5k miles ago.

Thanks Marty

Bump, and while we're waiting for the experts, which tranny and how many miles on it?

Rule out the Transfer case first (if applicable) then check fluid level...If it's way above full and doesn't drop when you fire up the engine, the pump has failed. If it does drop or level is normal (ie between the full cold and full hot marks on the dip stick, drop the pan to see if there is any metal debris in the pan once you get it back home. If it is transmission, it's either pump, stripped input shaft splines or destroyed front and/or rear gear sets.

Thank you guys. We got it home. And either Sunday or Monday I will get it a look. I did notice with the tranny fluid cold it was more on the “hot” side markings on the dipstick.

Maybe a dumb question but I just don’t know. Whats the best way to check the transfer case?

Well pulled they pan no big chunk of metal but seems to be more metal shavings than I remember last time.

Pull it out for overhaul. Looks like the comverter failed and sent shrapnel throughout the transmission. Unfortunately all too common with those...
Yeah I was pretty sure after seeing the pan it needs rebuilt. I put a new filter and filled with fluid and strangely enough is seems to drive just fine but I know there is something wrong in there.
