Thinking bout painting my wheels...

Well one of my rims has a bit of chrome chipping off and its really starting to bother me,so I'm thinking bout getting them painted.

What do you guys think?

Paint holds up just fine. 90% of the colored wheels on the road are paint, not powdercoat. Powdercoat does not look to hot if the wheel is not coated black or white.
Just make sure all the chrome is blasted off the wheels face before its painted or you will be pissed off when it peels eventually due to poor prep.

Carlos... I recommend powdercoating the barrels and painting the centers. If you need help, let me know, you know I'm local. I was about to do this to my wife's Asanti's, but we ended up selling them and moving on to a new wheel. For whatever reasons, those Asanti's are prone to flaking. We went through 2 hoops in less than a year, and a third needed it but we sold it as-is.


edit: also, I saw an Expedition rolling on that exact same wheel, but I think it was a 26". Setup just like that. Looked pretty menacing.

A buddy of mine owns a wheel shop and routinely has 26"s made for his Escalade (that tend to sell right off his truck). He said that paint up against chrome simply DOES NOT HOLD UP. The paint always flakes where it meet the chrome. No problem with machined-and-painted finishes -- just chrome -and-painted finishes.

So, if you wheels are already chrome, and there's no way to "dechrome" them before painting, I'd advise against it, based on my buddy's expertise.

just sandblast them then powder coat them. thats what they did with my dvinci's. Its much cheaper than buying a new set IMO powder coating looks much better than paint

Edgar, powdercoat does not look better than paint doen right, especially when its colored and not black/white.
And Kmel is right about paint flaking where it meets the chrome on a one piece wheel, but that issue is not an issue on multi-piece wheels.

If the factory doesn't feel obligated to do it neither should you. It's nice on off-road stuff but not necessary in street applications.

To be clear, I was talking about where the paint meets chrome on the same surface. If a barrel is painted, and the face is chrome (on a multi piece wheel), there shouldn't be an issue. But when you paint on/up against chrome on the face of a wheel, it apparently flakes -- every time.

+1 on powdercoating the barrels and painting the centers.. Paint will hold up just fine if done correctly. The problem is most people skip steps on the prep work, which is key. Either way, I would suggest getting the wheels sand/bead blasted before anything is done. I would have it down the the bare metal. Sandblasting is relatively cheap. So it shouldnt cost you too much

Yeah thats why I said IMO. I just like flat or matte black. Dont like that clear coat on my wheels. Paint does hold on wheels I had a bud paint his stock camaros with rustoleum and it lasted him for years haha. well thats when we were in high school. sorry for taking this thread way off.

Those shops powder barrels because the dust (particularly from metallic pads) from the brake pads kill regular paint quick. Powder holds up better there for people who don't clean their inner barrels, run harmful pads or live in rust belts. If the barrels are cleaned like the wheel face and outer lip + ran with ceramic pads in an area that does not dump salt on the roads, the paint will hold up in there just like it does on the face.
I plan on powdercoating my wheels when they get scratched enough because they are satin/matte black. If they were color, no way.

And OneBad I like your chrome looks right now.

I may be missing exactly what you're looking to do, but if I have it correct, and you want to paint the wheels to look like the pic, leaving chrome accents, then NO, it's apparently not a good thing to do.

It's where that paint runs up against the chrome that there will be a problem.

It's a shame, because that wheel in your pic looks awesome.

Yes I would like to make my wheel look exactly like the pic. Whether its painted or powder coated,I know powder coat is best but 'Ive seen paint hold up really good on wheels before.

I wanted to leave the lip chrome but i couldn't find a chroming shop in Miami, they all told me that the wheel had to be sent to California and it was going to be $485 a wheel.

What i don't understand is how ill the paint or powder coat won't hold up next to the chrome if Asanti does this from factory.

So you guys think that if the wheels gets properly prep it still wont hold up?
