Both fuels are TOP TIER gas, but my buddy who owns a 6.2L V8 tells me I should stick with Shell, saying there’s a noticeable difference in performance and mileage when using Shell gas.

What does everyone here run in their 6.2L V8 engines?

I’m running Exon Mobil 93 octane in my 6.2l Tahoe and my boat with Yamaha 4.3l V6.
There is a noticeable difference in performance and fuel efficiency in my experience and I am getting 23-25mpg on flat highway here in Florida.

This is after 13 miles of A1A with cruise set on 50 as the limit on the stretch of road is 45 mph

This is running 30 mph and getting 3.4mpg at this speed in the ocean in a 25’ center console is actually pretty good fuel efficiency. The Yamaha V6 is a strong solid motor.

Am I missing something? What model 6.2L motor are we talking about here? Based upon the thread section that your post is currently in, I'm assuming that you are talking about the L87 motor.

There is a current and existing thread that discusses this topic in great and long detail (some would say ad nauseam). I suggest that you look it up, as it answers your question, plus a lot more. I believe that the Cliff Notes version of the discussion in that thread is that you should remain with 87 octane from a Top Tier gas supplier (I believe that there is an official list of Top Tier gas suppliers in that thread). Any other alterations, except for adding an oil catch can, are most likely resulting in the expenditure of money for which there is no real return.

We fuel up with Costco 93 premium “top tier” gas and run Red Line fuel systems cleaner.

92 wherever it is cheapest, currently averaging about $4 a gallon here (at the cheap stations)
it's a little known thing that MANY MANY gas stations simply pay to use the brand name (franchise) and might have the same exact gas as the no name brand station across the street for .75 cents less a gallon.
I can tell you for fact I have saved thousands of dollars buying the cheaper gas over the years and my vehicles run fine.......

All premium fuel comes from the same tank farm. The only difference is the additive packages that are added per customer. You really can't get fresher fuel than Costco. They have a tanker there about every other day. Costco Premium is plenty good enough for any premium requirements for any vehicle. Don't overthink it.

I was using a Shell station on the GSP in NJ that consistently had the lowest price for regular in the area. When I had my BB tune done BB noted I had poor fuel quality. I guess that cleared up why they were cheaper than some no named stations where I’m at.

Guess there might be some truth behind the whole Shell thing, then. Thing is, also Lew, who does the DiabLew tunes for mostly GM full-size pickups (have one on my Silverado), recommends not using Shell.

Might be, hmmm. I switched to BP only to learn they are no longer considered top tier fuel  I thought both brands were supposed to be good but I was going off name recognition only.

I had a similar situation. I sent BB a data log for a tune adjustment, and Jarrad got back to me asking if I had used a lower grade fuel than the typical top tier 93 octane fuel that he had previously built my tune on. I remembered that before running the data log, I had been in the mountains camping, and I had to fill up at a bargain gas station on the mountain road. So, I ran another data log and sent it to him.

I remember being impressed that the tuner could tell that from a data log review, when comparing it to the previous tune data.

What’s you’re average in the Florida Suburbs (6 lanes of traffic)?

I’m in Indian River County and most highway traffic is a lot lighter than Martin county and south Florida.
Most of A1A is 45-55 mph speed limit.
I 95 speed limit 70 mph
I 95 is pretty far inland in this part of Florida and I only use it for travel out of town.

My average is around 14-16 mpg not towing of course!
Towing on flat roads is around 10 mpg.
I have seen 12 mpg on my 14 mile typical tow route.
I’m getting around 18-19mpg going 75-80 mph with some gear, luggage and my wife but she’s only 120 lbs

Most of my driving and towing is A1A and 2 lane smooth flat highway.
During the season (now) traffic has increased over the years especially during 9am-4pm.
Progress has been moving north in the last decade or so but the good news is Indian river county has a 35’ height limit so we have no high rise buildings and the coastal area has severe building restrictions due to wildlife refuge land and hurricane zoning restrictions on the beach

Yes BP decided they didn't want to pay the fee anymore. They claim their gas exceeds top tier requirements. As to whether top tier makes a difference, this image came from a Consumer's Report article:

I care more about how the valve feels about the fuel, than whether or not someone paid 'Top Tier' a bribe.
Too bad this is meaningless to GDI.
