Roof trim

So I've got this issue with the roof trim, I assume it's there for a reason but haven't been able to find out for sure. Does anyone know? Bent and separated on the passenger side, don't want to just take it off if it's covering openings in the roof.

I don't think that is structural just a seam cover/filler.

Mine is loose also, but not as bad as yours.
