Problem with ventilated seats in a 2017

Is it true that the ventilated seats only work when you have the AC on? Mine work just "okay" when the AC is on, but as soon as i turn it off it goes off, but the indicators on the console stay lit? dealer is saying it only works with AC.. Not sure if that is true,

I have a 2015 Denali. When I turn on the seat ventilation, with AC on or off, I can hear a fan motor and begin to feel the air flowing through the seat and seat back.

17+ are only vented...not truly A/C. 15 and 16 models actually cool but only when the A/C is running. You'll get airflow regardless if the AC is on, however.

while the 15/16 models do truly cool, they also vent warm air out the rear vents. Not sure if the new "vented" style act the same or not.

Yes, that's correct but they are just vented not chilled regardless of the AC is running.
