No start

hi, I’m fairly new here so please bare with me.... I have an03 Chevy Tahoe 4.8 2wd. It was running fine then all of sudden it staried sputtering and spitting and died. I let it sit for a bit, then started it up fine but when I push on gas it starts to run like it’s out of gas or starving. I let it sit overnight, this morning it started fine but when I pushed the gas it quit and now it only turns over with no start.... Could this be my fuel pump going bad or some other dreaded problem, please your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Rick

I would start by changing the fuel filter, It could be clogged up restricting flow. If that doesn`t help it`s probably the pump.

How many miles on the truck? Have you ever changed the filter or pump?

Sounds like it might be the fuel pump. Have someone bang on the gas tank while you crank it. If it starts most likely the fuel pump. Have any codes? Also, check your fuel pressure.

It it has over 280,000 I’ve only had it for a year, I haven’t replaced the either one. I listened for the pump but not hear it but it did start, when I push on the gas it wants to die out, but if I star it and let idle it would run for about 30 sec to 1 min.

you can easily test your fuel pump manually by disconnecting the fuel line at the filter, then turn the key to the on position. if it spits gas out or not then you'll know, just don't have anything flammable around you. its kind of a let nature take it's course kinda test. do it at your own risk and best to have a helper to turn the key on/off.

edit: and that may not even prove the pressure it may work but not be enough to keep the engine going, but you'll know if its do anything at all

I check the fuel pump fuse, it’s ok, I cleaned the MAF sensor, I disconnected the battery and held bothe cables together to clear the code because check engine light was on. The engine WILL START. But shudders out after about a minute, when the engine starts I CANNOT PUSH ON THE GAS it stalls. I CAN HEAR THE FUEL PUMP HUMMING. I DO NOT OWN A SCAN TOOL, SO IM TRYING TO DIAGNOSE IT OLD SCHOOL. I hate computer shit, there was nothing wrong with the old school cars. They ran, and not hard to fix.

My buddy brought over one that he borrowed and it gave a code for MAF sensor and lean on bank 1

Recommended fuel pressure for your 4.8 is 55-62psi,...a local shop can quickly check fuel pressure,...or you can get an inexpensive gauge and diy,.... with that amount of mileage if it hasnt been replaced I would suspect pump,.... do pump and filter at same time.

Even if I hear the pump and it starts, you suspect the pump

Only way to know for sure is pressure test,... the testers are pretty affordable and theres a shrader valve right on top of the rail,...very easy to access and knowledge is important in this case. The pump motor could be working but not creating enough pressure,...or inline filter could be clogged....but most time its the pump,... rarley have I seen a fuel delivery issue solved by just replacing filter,... because theres a pre-filter on the pump.

This article will show you how to test the MAF on your GM car, pick up, or SUV using a digital multimeter and without using a scan tool. All you need (to diagnose and troubleshoot the MAF sensor) is a digital multimeter capable of reading Hertz (Hz) frequency.

If the issue is in the pigtail, this one may fit-the-bill- ACDelco PT1274.
Check if yours is 4 or 5 wire and if rounded ends on the connector.

Sure. A cheapie (<$20) wired (Autel, etc.) code reader may still be a decent investment, as there are myriad codes that can cause a hard/no start and/or limp mode and the code can be (temporarily) reset to get you on your way safely. Also, Kobra (and others) makes an android OBD scanner - 'bout $13.

a bad MAF can cause what your experiencing I would try cleaning it first, if the problem doesn't go away after cleaning it then swap it out, there not expensive and a used one will probably last for years as well.
