my 2005 tahoe died driving down the freeway yesterday. i have power to everything but crank mode. i can turn the key to run and everything works, but when i try to crank it, theres nothing there, no click, no nothing. batterys good, i tried to pull codes, my scanner says "no link". anybody run into this? im assuming computer, but im not sure. all fuses are good and have power. i can take start relay out and jump it and make it crank, but no fire. HELP PLEASE.

ecu is bad. if u cant get it to communicate with your scanner its your computer that went bad.

it can also be your alternator, cus your battery can have voltage to power the other electronics in your car but not have the cranking amps to keep your truck running or start your truck..

How in the world can it be the alternator is the truck is not even CRANKING!?!? The alternator charges the battery once the engine is ON, alternators dont aid in starting!!!!!! lol Anyways....
Check all your connections at the battery, make sure grounds are good and there is no corrosion, loose terminals, etc. If all that is good, then grab a voltmeter and read battery voltage. It should be around 12.4V-12.6V. If it is a little less thats fine. Now have someone try to crank the truck while looking at the voltage. If there is a voltage drop to about 7-9volts, then you have a bad starter, because power is going to the starter, but it isnt engaging. If there is no voltage drop whatsoever, then you either have a problem with an aftermarket alarm(if equipped) disabling the starting system, bad ignition switch or could also be the Antitheft system. Try jumping the starter with a screwdriver and see if the truck starts. If it does, then you know the PCM is good only that it might need programming for the antitheft or switch.

guys.... starter, alternator or bad connection dont go here. he said he plugged the starter directly to the battery and it cranked. he said he hooked up his scanner and got no connection with ecu(engine control unit/computer). alarm or no alarm it must connect to the ecu. fuses are good, the computer is dead.
