New Steering Box- lots of play

In the quest to get my truck back to life, I bought a Redhead Steering Box.

I believed the original one to be shot- I could barely keep it on the road. Decided to just scrap it and get a new one.

So I replaced the rag joint (it was shot) and the steering box, along with the pitman arm. Wasn't that bad, just a little patience. (The timing cover ordeal was a major PIA)

Now after this replacement, I have way too much play. Sure it "feels" better, but I have to move the wheel 6 inches before the wheel starts to turn.

Maybe I missed something?

Hold the coupler at the steering box with big pliers and have helper rock steering wheel back and forth. That will isolate a few more parts to determine where your play is. But it does sound like Redhead is looser than old box. Good Luck!

So I'm taking it all down..

Realized my ball joints were much worse off than I thought. Changing them all out, and the tie rods. Will then reassemble and see if that helps.

It was the ball joints. They were toast.

Replaced all 4 and it’s like a new truck. Couldn’t be happier! Now onto the Raptor liner.
