Knapp I’m not sure, James Black just let the switch board operator know that you would like to purchase an extended warranty.

I’m being redundant on this but if you have the $3.5-$4k that the platinum no deductible plan costs then you have better options than buying that plan.
If you don’t have the $4k it might be better to a couple hundred a month into an account while you are under warranty.

I am no financial advisor but why not do what these warranty and insurance companies do? They use statistics and math to make money and just like the house in gambling, the house always comes out ahead.

Just open a free account with any of the top firms, Schwab, E-trade etc., and put the money into an S&P index fund for the safest position. History and statistics show 6%-10% return and you can always find a quality stock that pays a dividend or is extremely low price.
Even if you just bought GM stock a year ago you would have almost double your initial investment.

The only downside is capital gain tax if you have to cash in but statistically you will be ahead.

In the event you are a lucky dog and nothing ever happens in 6 years there is a high probability you will have way more than $6-$7k at the end of 6 years which is the term of the Platinum plan that costs $4k last time I checked.
Maybe it’s more this year?

The plan with a $100 deductible for 6 years/ 72,000 miles was $1800, which I thought was reasonable. I do get and can appreciate what you are saying, though. Thank you for weighing in.

$1800 sounds pretty cheap for such long plan. What are specs on your vehicle?

Wow!
That’s a great price for 6/72k.
Maybe I need to check again.
When I checked Knapp they were one of the cheapest but for my 2024 Tahoe High Country 6/72k with no deductible was over $3500.00 when my Tahoe was 1 year old.

Knapp was surprisingly much higher... around $2,300 for the same protection plan.

Glad it worked out for you. Thanks for posting, this may help someone else looking for coverage save money. Many years ago we had a list on this forum of Dealers so members could choose extended coverage at discounted prices. At least have bargaining power at the time of purchase to try and get their Dealers finance person to match or beat the discounted price. It actually worked for many members.

Thanks for posting the prices!

I’m still not clear on what is actually covered.
If you get the platinum 72/72 and your truck is one year old and 12k miles does it mean that you have another 72 months and 72k miles B2B ( 7 years and 84k miles from now) or does it mean you have 6 years/72k miles total added to the basic B2B an extra 3 years and 36k which is 6 years and 72k miles ?
I am missing something here.

Either way that’s cheaper than I got when shopping a year ago but it is like a lot of insurance products - the details are not very clear and the fine print and the actual payout in the event of having to use it might take some effort to enforce coverage.

I still have another year and a half and 15k miles of B2B and the initial $4k I put into a Schwab account is up over 50% but the market has been record high and I was lucky.
This is a great example of “past performance history is not a guarantee of future performance”.

I could cash in partially, pay the capital gains tax and have enough money to buy the 72/72 platinum plan from Todd and still have a couple $k from my initial investment.

Again l, thanks for posting those prices.

If I may chime in, I've bought 2 extended warranties on GM and BMW, and, admittedly, I lost on both, so yes, the "financial advice" of avoiding made sense. On the BMW, people said, twin turbo, $6800 to fix it dude, a $2800 extended warranty is a no-brainer. I agreed, and here it is, car is 19 years old, and nothing broke. So the oddity of the extended warranty is one goes around hoping something expensive will happen to justify the decision.

Well, thing is, in 2026, it seems vehicles are as unreliable as ever so maybe it is OK to get an extended warranty. One thing I'm thinking of from my experience--we have a tendency to over insure ourselves, only natural, as we are risk-averse as humans. But, the part I don't want to overinsure is mileage--something I have control over. So.....I'd want more time, less mileage. That above grid is helpful. Maybe 84 or even 96, but, not 12k per 7 or 8 years. peel that back based on what seems to be a good break point. Hopefully defects can be flushed out by the end of the extended warranty. Today, the warranty is less % wise to repairs, than it was in 2010, when I say got the BMW for $2800. A 4 wheel alignment at BMW was $150 back then. It's like $350 now (just a convenient illustration). But, the warranty did not double. my .02 ymmv

The plan time and mileage ADDS to the vehicle from the day you buy the contract.

That’s why I’m waiting for 12k miles to buy mine. I don’t see any reason to buy it before than. I talked to Knapp on the phone and asked them the same thing and he agreed just wait until 12k.

You can also buy it after 12k (but before your factory B2B is over) however he told me the prices go up.

Also note that this is not the same as your original bumper to bumper coverage. Some things are not covered, might have changed some since we got ours so you'll have to read it close. I also note that when I log in to my Chevy account it doesn't show up there so I keep a copy of the contract in the Tahoe.

Also, psychologically it seems to hurt when you have to hand out $2800 on a seven year old vehicle repair versus $2800 early on, and then it's covered later. Nothing upsets me more than when you have to put a bunch of money in a vehicle that you're thinking about getting rid of in the next six months anyway. If a warranty saves me later, then I may think about keeping the vehicle longer. But if I put that same money into it later, then I start thinking about, well, I really want to get rid of this thing before it becomes a money pit.
