HID questions

helle everyone..i own a 2003 yukon xl and im planning on getting some HIDs for the lows and fogs..i was wondering if there would be any problems with installing them into the stock lights(lows,fogs)..also, i see lots of different kits being sold in different price ranges..would i do fine with any? thanks!

welcome, exacly what I did to mine...forget Highs, but LOVE them in my lows and fogs....

you can get decent kits for $50 and up....but I would for sure get a relay.

Its high quality. I use it on all my HID installs. I do however replace the relay with a high end BOSCH unit. Theres no need for it on most setups. I am just real pick when it comes to relays.

thanks for the reply..from my research on this forum i see mostly ppl are using ddm hids..can i use hids in the stock headlights and fogs? (03 yukonxl)

Technically you can.

Much can be said about the negatives of this, but they will run fine in the stock housings. Just don't go crazy and get 75 or 100w HID's. Stick with 35w and you'll be safe.

Thanks for the info..I drive mostly highway and rural areas so I was thinking of getting 55w, would that be safe?

For the headlights, probably yes. Not for the fogs. I've got 55w DDM's in my fogs and am on the second set of housings. I'm getting some burn/melt spots on the lens, and the last set actually melted out a bit near the socket, which allowed water to get in.

Check out my link in my signature. That is the preferred, best output option for HID's....a good HID projector retrofit. At the very least, since you have a Yukon you can pick up some OEM Denali projector headlights and improve on your light output for minimum cost.

dude check this out. If you Truly want some bad ass lighting.

Install these for your fogs, I run them on EVERY vheical I drive, including my parents and most my friends vehicals now run these fogs with 55watt HIDS.
You will NOT be dissapointed in them.
Projector FOgs, full metal and glass body.
with 55-100watt 4500k HIDS. Buy 55and lower from DDMtuning for the price. Raptor V2's is what they selling now.
If you want 75-100 watt go to HIDgeeks.com.
BESHURE if you order these Fogs to tell them you want the bulb adapter in 9005 to match your low and high beam bulb type. so you can carry a spare or 2 in glove box incase a bulb goes out. Think one bulb type to rule them all..

As for your headlights. I wouldnt run anything over 35watt 5k hids in them due to heat melting the lenses and the light scatter that NON projector housings cause.

To complete your headlights you can get a decent set of projector housings from 140-180$ on ebay in damn near any style and color you want.
But.. If Iwas you and wanted the best.
Retrofit your housings IF your lenses are nice and clear with these Projector retrofit lenses and this How to install projecotors video. You can do this easy as pie. With projectors you can run 55watt HIDs up top and not melt the lenses.. Or follow DenaliAK's install thread in his Sig... He did a really good job.

100watt fogs and 55watt headlights, Combine to be BRIGHT AS WTF IS THAT!
and you wont blind oncoming traffic on a flat lvl road.. If you adjust them correctly.

Currently I run 55 fogs and 35 lows. I light up EVERYThing to around 75 yards infront of me! But I want more and will be upgrading this week to 100watt fogs and 55 lows, Both at 4500k I like the purest white possible.
I can see blue in 5k and up. HATE BLUE LIGHTS! hurts my eyes.

LOL anyways GL on your decision. I promise that if you follow the steps above, you will never go back to normal lights again.
You will Not be dissapointed. I think my lights are the best mod I have ever done to my vehicals.

thanks for all the info bro..those fogs look sick..your telling me to get a 9005 bulb i have a yukon not a denali..the stock yukon lights have a 9006 low bulb and arnt crystal clear the denali has a 9005,so if i get oem denali headlights will i need some converter for the low bulbs? also would the projectors in the stock denali headlights be good enough?

im looking for the whitest light as well, so 4500k will be the choice?

Ok, what I meant by the 9005 was assuming that yukons and tahoes all used the same bulb type 9005.

Heres one thing you guys might not know. In HID's the bulb is the same for 05 and 06's.
If you look at the locking bayonets. they are smaller than 05 and 06's this allows the same bulb to be used for either type.

But considering you Do infact have a 06 bulb. Then when and if you order those fogs, tellem you want the adapter plate in a 06 configuration. This will allow you to run the same bulb type across the board. saving you grief when buying replacements.

As for the Kelvin or color of the light, thats your choice. I chose 4500 as its close to factory 4300 that most newer GM and Chevys use.. thus camoflauging my bright ass lights from the police alil more. That and I like a more natural light vs 5-6k which to ME looks really blue.

Ok cool. I most likely will order the fogs.kinda confused tho.stock fogs are 880 so if I get them in a 06 how will it plug in the 880 plug? Do I need to tell him its a 880 and I wana covert it to a 06? For the headlights,if I order oem denali headlights will I be able to run 55w in a 06?. Sorry for all the Q's.

Get 880's for the fogs unless you're changing the housing and it uses a different base.

Get 9005/9006 HID's for lows/highs.

the denali headlights uses a 9005/yukon 9006..so if i put the oem denali lights i will need a 9005 bulb but the stock yukon uses 9006..thats where im lost..would a 9005 bulb fit in a 9006 plug?

Ok guys, follow me here...

OEM Fogs = 88X series bulbs, 880 is oem.
OEM Highs and Lows in HID bulb type = 900X 5 OR 6

When you order those Projector fogs from ebay. Tell the vendor to put on the 9005 OR 9006 ADAPTER PLATE. it doesnt matter which cause they are the same....

Since HID bulbs in 9005 and 9006 are THE SAME. you will have ONE bulb type that can go in ALL 3 locations, Fog, Lows, HI's..... Simple and efficient.

This way you can carry a SPARE HID in glove box incase one goes out, and it will work in ALL locations....

I carry a bulb AND 55 watt ballast in truck incase one goes out.. Nuthin worse than leaving a bar, have a light go out and get popped by police for a stupid bulb or ballast.

The Plug on a 88X series bulb in the SAME as a 900X series bulb.
Its a DIRECT PNP swap..

Hope this clears up the confusion.

I was running under the assumption that he wasn't going to change his fogs right away, so to stick with the 880's. I got the 9005/6 part, though.
