I want to put a back up camera on my truck. I was told by the installer that he will use Nav tv for the install which is similar to a Lockpick. My question is, if I replace my headunit with say a double din pioneer, do I still need the Nav tv to install a back up camera? I want to keep the steering wheel controls. I don't need the ipod or any of the other stuff. I really only want the camera. But I looked up pricing on the Nav tv and its going for about $400. It be would better to just to replace the HU if it has the same capabilities of my stock HU with the Nav tv.

Any suggestions for HUs? I saw the pioneer 4300. I want navigation and keep steering wheel controls while being able to add a back up camera. I don't really care about Bluetooth or other features like that. I do have a rear entertainment system. I was looking at the pioneer double din with Nav. I think its like $800-900. I saw one member suggested an Advent but I can't find them for sale. Seems like I'm almost better off keeping the stock HU and adding the Nav tv so I can keep the features I already have while adding a camera. By the time I buy a new HU and get the modules for steering wheel, it'll just be cheaper going the stock route.

I really hate to recommend head units, because it's a very personal preference. What you need to answer is, do you want your truck to look factory, but better, or do you want to go all aftermarket?

If you look at Timmy's Tahoe (Click here to see it), he's kept it stock looking, but upgraded a bunch to make it better. Upgraded to better factory stuff.

My old Escalade, I upgraded everything, but kept it stock. Upgraded to the Newer factory nav, added navtv, added back up camera and iPod adapter. Also upgraded the rims to the stock esky 22's.

My current yukon is going complete aftermarket. Aftermarket radio, rims, everything.

Damn I'm typing books tonight...

To be honest, doesn't matter to me whether it looks stock or aftermarket. As long as its functional, I'm happy. I plan to put a system in my truck later this year. Nothing huge, maybe two 10s or 12s. I have a 1,000 watt amp and I'm considering adding a second amp for the tweeters and 6.5s, maybe around 400 watts. Ideally, I'd like to just add the subs and a back up camera. I just don't want to fork out another $500 for a head unit with features I'll never use so that's why I'm considering staying with the stock HU. At the moment, it looks like it'll save me a lot of money by staying with the stock HU and just adding the Nav tv for the camera. I appreciate the input Nate. Definitely helped.

I had the pioneer avic z110bt in my Tahoe LTZ and just installed the pioneer rear cam. In my avalanche I installed the factory nav unit and put in the Lockpick with an aftermarket rear can. So you can do either or...
