Chatted in service mgr office today about catch cans. I asked what his genius LS tech thought of them. We go back to service and chatted with said genius about the topic at hand. Consensus was, my warranty would not be voided, it does have a positive need, and as long as I didn’t buy the $2.99 version, I should be safe. Even save mgr agreed! My dealer provides the lifetime powertrain warranty, so GM doesn’t have a vote concerning any claims here.

Winning!

I have my K&N I took off if the RST before it left me..

Happy with the JL Catch Can kit. All hoses with proper connections, simple to install bracket. While there are others, I found this was a crazy simple and custom fit install.

I agree, the JL was the best one and super easy install. Fittings were positive and thats the third thing I did to my new Yukon (1st and 2nd things were AFM delete and Stop/Start delete).
I am at a little over 1K miles on the truck now and am going to do the first oil change soon. I will see what comes out of the catch can.

Well, nothing matters if it’s not in writing. If you throw a rod or whatever and say “the service manager said my mod was fine” GM isn’t going to give a shit.

Any time there’s extensive engine failure they’re forced to do extensive documentation they have to send in - specifically so expensive warranty calls aren’t subjective to dealers whims.

Catch can is really not much of a modification or change, all it does is catch vapors returning to the intake path via the same path as the configured by the manufacturer.

With the history of these engines failing, mostly due to bearing and/or lifter related failures, I really would doubt anyone could find a way a catch can could have had any impact on bearing and/or lifter failures.

Not much of a modification but still a modification, they will come back and say the engine design was changed is what caused the failure then you will want to fight it. If it's out of warranty then mod away.

I just took this picture yesterday. This is on a 2015 Tahoe with 5k miles since the last time it was emptied. It catches a TON of oil.

Actually very simple work around, if you are so worried about a catch can voiding any warranty coverage, just remove it before sending vehicle into the dealer. Assuming you did not butcher up any of your hoses, you just put the 1 short hose back on, 5 minute job and remove the catch can, depending on how you mounted it, 5 minutes typically. 1 bolt on my vehicle. I put the original hose in the rear storage area.

That's a good amount of oil, I recommend checking and draining the catch can about every 2000 miles just so you do not run into problems with an overly full catch can.

Just think how all that oil could be treating your intake path and intake valves.

How many miles on your 2015? The higher the mileage and the more the blowby, the more the oil catch can will fill up. So as the vehicle ages, you may need to check and empty the can more frequently.

About 160k miles. It’s used by my wife for kid transport so makes tons of short trips. Mostly city driving.

I bought it used when it had 104k on the clock. It had no catch can on it for all those miles and I had to pulled the intake to clean the intake valves. They were coated in oil. I mean caked!

Thanks for sharing. It is crazy what happens to the intake path on the DI engines with no fuel behind the intake valves. While it can be cleaned up, it is no fun to do or can be expensive. Wonder how many engines have had larger sections of carbon break off and cause problems within the cylinder(s)?

Too bad the vehicle did not have a catch can from day 1. While it may not keep the valves pristine, I am sure they would have far less carbon and oil build up on them with a catch can.

I know some of the Fords are using both Port and Direct Injection on some motors. While I do not think the Port injection is specifically for the intake valve deposit build up, it probably helps a lot on those engines.

What is the best setup for a 2013 ?? I know this is the wrong forum... but ...
I've seen $20 all the way up to $200. Racing applications, street applications, etc.

I still swear by my MightyMouse catch can. You probably don't need the extreme version unless you plan on boosting the truck like I did, but they make a real quality product. Its been on my truck 6 years (2017 Burb).

I have read good things about the JL catch can also but I have no experience with it.

@ReaperHWK There's a bulletin on how to clean the intact track using GM provided detergents etc without taking the motor apart.

JL or Mightymouse. Stay away from the $20 amazon catch cans

Go to the J&L web site and look for the specific application.

I have a 2016 Yukon XL Denali with 98,000 miles.
I bought it used in 2023 with 75,000 miles on the odometer.
At 77,800 miles, the lifters failed. The repair was covered by power train warranty 100%.

The day I got it back I installed the J&L catch can. I empty it monthly with a reminder set on my Google calendar. It's usually about 1/3 full.

Is your hypothesis the catch can would have prevented lifter failure? Trying to understand the context there.

I trust dealerships/manufacturers about as far as....
Keep the tube you remove, keep it in your truck, problem occurs, replace the CC with the tube....
