At least they still are producing V8!
Not many options out there if you are looking for a truck or large SUV with a V8
I think Toyota and Lexus made a big mistake getting rid of the V8 for Land Cruiser, Sequoia and GX 550.
All the new Toyota’s even the 4 cylinder Land Cruiser require premium fuel and they don’t have better fuel efficiency than our 6.2l V8.
Exactly. The precise reason I’m in Suburban.

Yep exactly same here. I’m a Ford nut but we have for years bought GM SUVs for family hauler use precisely because of V8s. Ford lost their way in 1997 going to all those DOHC high RPM screamers that weren’t real truck engines anymore. Then the V6 turbo killed it for me.

Unfortunately I didn’t know about DFM until after purchase of the 2024, I may have possibly picked a V6 Ecoboost that gave us 6 cylinders all the time, but with all the turbo complexity, plastic oil pans, wet timing belts I probably would have still picked GM V8s. DFM delete or 6.6L swap is still significantly better as options.

We did test drive an 3.5L Ecoboost, sorry the GM V8s still had the upper hand.

Yes it’s dumb why they want to get rid of V8s and go to tiny engines to haul heavy trucks. Tiny engines need more throttle to pull heavy trucks, more throttle means more gas. Its really that simple. Looks like the datapoint above on landcruiser 4 cyl illustrates this point. The only advantage is that these smaller engines are going to live less working hard all the time. Planned obsolescence.

1st: No engine operates at EXACTLY any temp.
GM's DI engines operate between 95C & 105C normally, depending on many variable interdependent factors.
Under 'stress', operating temps can reach as high as 115C, depending on the stresses
(although I only once have ever let any engine exceed 110C - NEVER AGAIN!).

2nd: You wouldn't overheat it with 0W30 or 5W30 or 0W40 or 5W40 ... or even 10W50 or 15W50,
which is what GM recommends during racing for the LT1, provided you change the oil BACK to 0W40 once the racing is over.
Despite the fact that - yes - thicker motor oil transfers heat more slowly than thinner oil,
the cooling system's reserve capacity makes motor oil's heat conductivity a NON-ISSUE.
What does the L1T engine have to do with it

but it uses 0w40 which apparently will overheat a 6.2L.
Are there also sports engines that run on 0w60 oil, apparently also overheated? Are you joking or serious? What's the point of comparing warm with soft? The engine is l87, and the engine of the corvette

I'll add that also I have a Tundra and a 5th gen 4runner and would have greatly enjoyed adding a Sequoia. That is until they shrunk it to near the size of a 4runner.

Bottom line was that the Suburban and Yukon was easily the best option. Most cargo room. V8. Decent offroad package (compared to Ford). To top it off it is a fantastic looking suv.

The 5.3 was not showing up with any major issues. I drove one and didn't find it underpowered.

By the way, there is another interesting thing. One of the important tasks of motor oil is to remove heat from engine parts. So, thicker oil removes heat worse than thinner oil. And our L87 engine is heat-loaded, the motor oil is hot, and the engine itself operates at a temperature of 100C. So I would not overheat it with my own hands, pouring 0-40.

I guess my 6.2l Yukon is going to melt down soon. Engine has not had 0W20 in it since 544 miles, over 8k of mainly highway driving.

I also guess all the recalled 6.2l's that GM is planning on putting 0W40 in are also going to overheat and melt down as well.

Same for the 6.2l Camero as well, 0W40.

I will never run 0W20 or thinner in any engine in my stable, just not going to happen. Not going to be engine tester for CAFE ratings.

I can imagine how surprised you will be if, God forbid, your engine breaks down, despite the oil 0-40, :)

I guess 0W20 did not cool your engine off well enough when towing at 100 MPH for hours on end. Kind of severe duty situation by most peoples understanding.
Are you such an expert that you know why my engine broke down?)))
Think about it, I've been in this mode and I've already driven about 15,000 miles with this trailer

There are a couple of factors here

Cooling via oil - yes thinner oil film has less thermal resistance so it will move heat between engine surfaces faster. Move heat from block into coolant, and then into air.

Heating via friction - job of oil is to reduce friction. If the thinner oil doesn’t do the job, then any heat generated will breakdown the oil quickly and its catastrophe after that. The cooling ability of the thinner oil means nothing if it can’t lubricate to being with.

God help us all, even those that don’t believe in lubrication :p

Engine tester? There are literally tens of millions of vehicles out there that have accumulated hundreds of billions of miles running 0W20 oil. I'd say it is pretty well proven. But run what you want...... :)

Funny how GM pivoted to a 0w40. It is almost like the 0w20 was not adequate.
It would be if they said 0w-40 is what all the new 6.2s would take. But they dont.

I am not sure the point you are trying to make. Why are the new 6.2s not requiring 0w-40? Why are the replacement motors not requiring it? Why is it only on the condemned engines?

The answer is in there somewhere hahah lmao.
