First off, new to the forum, so hello! I've been stalking a while looking up information, and finally decided to become a member. Secondly, I did the 6-Hi mod this past weekend while at work (I love being a Paramedic :p), and on the way home, occasionally the lights would flicker off and then back on. I used a 3A 50V diode, and followed the instructions that I found on here. I ended up pulling the diode for fear of the lights shutting off and not coming back on. I'm assuming that it was a diode problem of some sort, just looking for a little bit of insight, or whether I used the wrong diode, or what.

Welcome to the forums, to me it sounds like maybe there was a connection problem with the way you wired it. Did it happen mainly on bumps or just random on/off? Did you solder wires to the diode or use the diode direct from relay to relay?

What's happening is the relay terminal that the diode is in, is causing the opposite terminal (caddy corner most likely) to lose contact. Take a short piece of wire, twist it, and put it into the other (female) terminal. That should solve your issue. Do this to any relay post receiver that needs it.

..oh, and welcome!

Wires were soldered to the ends of the diode, and the problem was intermittent. I'll try the wire on the other side and see if that fixes it. Thanks a lot guys! Also, I did notice that the fog lights were not as bright as if I were to press the button (i.e. I could press the fog button and they would brighten.) Any idea as to what that could be?

The fogs run on a 15A circuit. The His & Lows run on a 10A circuit. Post up if you have any more issues.

Got it, I just assumed they were both 15A....Chip, I tried to send you a PM asking about the full-time DRL mod I saw you did in your "Post up your lights thread," but quickly realized that you need 10 posts to send a PM to someone.

I don't except *** from assholes.

LMFAO! I'm just kidding! Welcome to the forum. This place is awesome! Everybody is super cool!

What are you looking to do with your DRLs? Do you want to convert them like I did? If so, just run them parallel into the running lights (I hard wired mine) and throw some Sylvania "Long Life" bulbs in there. They're the best lights for this, by far!

Let me know if I can help further. It's always a pleasure to help out.

Ouch....I'll remember the ******* comment if you ever need an ambulance in my area :p jk. So did you just splice into the low beam bulbs at the hot wire and leave ground alone, or did you hook ground and hot into the low beams? I'm thinking about this sitting at the computer, too lazy to go 200' outside and look at the truck myself. Also, would wire taps be fine for this? I'm used to soldering connections together and not wire tapping, but where I'm at I can't get the iron outside to do it. Also, did you make the lights full time by just painting over the photo cell, or what?

I'm good on the EMS. Local 747 Brother! LOL! (Not me, but family)

Don't use taps, ever. They're unreliable and potentially dangerous. I spliced into the running lights (right next to the DRLs) with butt connectors and heat shrink tubing. I covered my photo cell with electrical tape and jumped the relays for the full time fogs.

Funny, I just got an offer from Sunstar Ambulance that I turned down. And thanks again, as soon as I get my good crimpers from the garage I'll get this done; stupid POS cheapy crimp/cutters from AutoZone couldn't crimp heatshrink onto 22ga wire.
