So I found one 22 Yukon XL in Northwest state. Asked if it’s compliance with California emissions, dealer said Yes and only selling at MSRP. So decided to take it. As I’m about to make a deposit for it. Dealer texted back, saying, upon checking that the car don’t have Smog Pump to meet California Standard? Is it True? Or just another dealer trick to sell to higher bidder?

I recently bought a 2022 Yukon AT4 from Mississippi and shipped it here to California. This was just last month (March). It had a factory Cat-back exhaust as one of the options on it. Both the dealer and I were both worried about it passing California emissions because of where it was, but everything worked out just fine. I just needed to get it smogged. The taxes and licenses were paid in Mississippi when I made the purchase. There were no internal mechanical systems in the engine that were any different than here in California, or lack thereof, so you should be good.

The only thing out of the ordinary that I had to do was put miles on it. I know it sounds crazy, but when I received the vehicle, it only had 13 miles on it. It's kind of an oxy moron to drive it illegally, but that's what it takes. The oxygen sensor hadn't quite yet matured yet, so it wasn't registering as it should. I burned in 500 miles, and it worked just fine after that. So it cleared smog, the DMV did their visual inspection, and I got my license plates that same day.

As for that dealership, I call BS.

Thank for sharing your experience buying out of state. Does your Yukon AT4 has California emissions label? And DMV don’t even check the label when you register?

it should say on the engine tag 48 states or 50 states (the air box...) So yes the dealer is pulling your leg

Consider asking for a photo of the underhood emissions sticker. It will say what kind of emissions standard the vehicle was built to and include the VIN.

In the photo below from under the hood of my old truck, the last eight digits of the VIN are on the left and the Group number tells you what the emissions standard is, which in my case are California as my vehicle was delivered to a dealer in Pennsylvania and that state used and may still use California emissions standards.

The DMV checks EVERYTHING. Not sure what you mean by a "California Emissions Label"... Most vehicles have a "50 state" type label on it that indicates it's legal in 50 states. Believe it or not, California isn't all that strict. People like to think the state and regulatory commission on vehicles is very prohibitive, but it's not. It seems like they only care about the revenue coming into the state if you buy elsewhere. As long as they get their fair cut of the taxes, and it's a newer car, they can care less. Believe me, I was sweating bullets after I made my purchase and the Mississippi dealer told me he wasn't confident it would pass California emissions... So all in all, you should be good.

they prohibit new vehicles from being imported from out of state unless specific requirements are met....

i.e replacement car if yours breaks down, accident replacement, 50 state emissions etc..
